I recently purchased a new dv7-2180us to replace my 5 year old zv5000 that was/is having power issues. I want to take the hard drive from the zv5000 and place it as a 2nd hard drive in the new laptop (mainly because I don't want to have to struggle to keep the old one turned on long enough to transfer the files). Is it possible to do this, and if so do I need anything extra to mount the drive.
Thanks for any help.
Sabrina

Not exactly. The drive's not compatible with the hardware in the new HP. (Old IDE connector to a newer IDE-to-Sata connector.)
You could get an external enclosure and get that taken care of, or you could get an adapter cable, like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8
I recommend the latter, myself. I have one, and it works fantastic for getting information off of older hard drives. It does take some technical knowledge to use, but I think you could probably figure it out.

Thanks for the advice. I was afraid that the hard drive wouldn't be compatible. I'll try the adapter cable first.
Thanks again,
Sabrina

I will have a dv7-3060us notebook soon and I would like to know how can I add a 320GB SATA hard drive into a 2nd bay? This hard drive used to be in my old Dell laptop. Do I need some cables for that or will the new laptop come with a necessary cable for an additional hard drive?
Thank you!

The second hard drive kit will not be delivered with the laptop unless you order it with 2 hard drives. You can get the caddy (metal frame) and the connector from aftermarket houses such as this:
