Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ41-208AU. The specifications are as follows:
AMD Turion II Dual-Core M520, 2.3GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM (1.75GB usable)
320GB Hard-drive
AMD M880G with ATi Mobility Radeon HD4200
(Catalyst Control Centre refers to Memory size as being 974MB and Type as Hyper Memory)
Windows7 Ultimate 32Bit
What I don't get is that when I run GTA IV in my laptop the resource size is shown as 320MB, meaning that the Graphics adapters Video memory is 320MB only and not 974MB as mentioned by Catalyst Control. Why is that? GTA IV and some other games does not perform in good frame rates. How do I improve performance of my laptop? Will an additional RAM help?

Some graphics chips borrow some of the advertised memory from main memory.
If you want great frame rates you will need a newer laptop, or game on a Desktop.
Most Laptops are not designed for gaming at all.
