HP Pavilion dv90005us Product Ez452ua #ABA Version REV 1 MB Quanta Model 30B9 Ver 65.20 AMD Turion 64 1.6 MHz 2048 mem
The battery will not charge, ( 8 cell HP-432974-001) so I am figuring that it is dead. I order a 12 cell battery for a repacement but it was returned and checked out as being defective. Another replacement battery was sent (checked at battert company before shipment and was checked out as good)and was inserted into the battery conpartment. Again this battery would not charge. As long as the power cord (electrical) is plugged in the computer works fine. Unplug the power cord and computer will shut down. Plug elect cord back in Reboot computer and Date and Times has reverted back to 1990s. Since the power cord is working fine to boot the computer abd will run fine what would my other reasones be for not getting a battery to charge?

Hey Mutt,
Try a "Hard Reset" on the hardware, turn the computer off, remove the battery and powercord and hold the power button down for about 1 min, then let it go, put the battery/powercord back in and turn it back on, see if it charges from there if not try a battery test .. if vista ... Start/help and support/troubleshooting tools/battery check

Do you have the latest BIOS? There is one posted for your model that addresses battery failure:

I have an HP Pavilion dv5z notebook running Vista Home Premium (32 bit), and I had the same problem Mutt described: my HP 12 cell battery would not charge. It would work fine when plugged into an AC outlet, however the battery status message always showed the charge was constant % but "not charging". The HP Battery Check app even gave a "Replace" diagnosis for the battery.
Taking Cheryl's advice to upgrade to the latest BIOS, I entered my notebook product ID in the "Software & Driver Downloads" page on hp.com, and found there was a more current BIOS upgrade available for my notebook model! So I downloaded the BIOS upgrade, ran it, and my problem was fixed!
Thank you so much Cheryl!

Does anybody know of a similar repair for the dv4 model? I have a model 1028us with support page
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os
and I can't find a bios update available.
This battery issue is driving me crazy. I have only had the laptop for one month!

I also have ths same problem with my dv4, which is also just under a month old. It's getting ridiculous, and I am no longer able to take my laptop anywhere without the power cord. I believe that the F.24 Bios update was supposed to fix this problem, however that update has been pulled due to it causing big problems http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.
Hopefully they release this bios update without the problems soon.

As I had reported in my first answer that my problems were solved by doing a bios update. Well I jumped the gun and I still have the same problem.
1 Did bios update
2 Bought a new battery
3 Bought a new adapter
After all that, HP now says it's in the hardware. Opened up the laptop and concluded that the problem is in the motherboard.
Only way to fix the battery problem is to replace the motherboard. $300.00+
If you have a laptop that's under warranty send it in and have it repaired. ASAP
My laptop is now a good desktop thats easier to carry

I would be willing to bet that if you would load Windows XP that your problems would be over. This seems to be an operating system related problem- it is happening on Dell, Sony and HP but Vista is the common denominator.
For what it is worth, I am having the same problem on Windows 7.
If the drivers for your laptop are available for Windows XP and you have access to an installation disk, I would give it a try.
