Booting linux from non-MBR - possible?

Is it possible to boot a non-MBR partitioned drive using a HP notebook?

 

I've recently purchased a HP 8560w and replaced its HDD with a Kingston SSD. Installed linux on it using an SSD-friendly method to allow proper alignment of partitions, but neither using a GPT (GUID partition table) nor using syslinux with a full-device BTRFS could be booted by the notebook's BIOS.

 

I assume the setup was correct in both cases because starting to boot a linux boot cd and choosing "Boot other OS" from the boot menu boots the SSD correctly. Attempting to boot the device directly results in a 'no operating system found' message.

 

The issue was discussed on the Arch linux forums here and other HP notebook owners report the same issue with older hardware as well.
