I have scanned my laptop with Crucial's and Kingston's memory scanners and they showed that my laptop can support up to 2GB of RAM and has 2 memory slots, however i have spoken with HP support in my country and they told me that my laptop can identify more than 2GB of RAM and i can plug-in 2GB of RAM module in one slot and leave the older module in second slot which is 512MB to get 2512MB of RAM in total.
I have also read on another forum that people successfully installed 4GB of RAM on Pavilion dv5282ea laptop.
How can i do that? Is this safe and can be relied upon? I don't want any software or hardware problems of having more memory than laptop supports.

If you have read and been told that others have successfully installed 4 GB RAM or 2GB + 512MB RAM in an identical notebook then there should be no problem if you believe what they said.
The financial risk is yours to accept. If you purchase the memory at a reputable local vendor and it does not work, then you should be able to return it.
Adding more RAM won't damage your notebook hardware or software.
Your notebook will either be able to use the memory modules or not. It is as simple as that. ![]()

As per specs on HP website over here for your laptop, it supports maximum memory of 2GB. You can install 2 x 1GB memory modules each on both memory slots to upgrade it to 2GB or install 2GB on one slot and leave extra slot blank. I dont think leaving 512MB on other slot would make it 2.5GB.
You can use a 3rd party softwarel like SIW. The freeware version is available for free download over here

The SIW report log says max memory is 2GB. Your processor supports 32bit instruction means you cannot install 64bit OS on your laptop for sure.

HP support in Israel says that my laptop can support up to 4GB of RAM and that 2GB module can be installed in 1 slot also.
HP support in USA says the opposite and that 2GB of RAM in 1 slot cannot be supported.

Received another email from HP and they said the following:
Actually, that setup will work, but HP does not recommend it. Certain issue may arise.

Yea! It did!
I bought 2GB of Kingston RAM, took away old 512MB Samsung module and left 512MB PQI module with new Kingston module and it worked! Samsung was the module which came originally with my laptop but i took it out because of the last different timing which is probably not that important, but i just wanted maximum compatibility. Now my laptop is smooth again! I guess i was a little sceptical and stubborn to do this earlier.
Question remains however is:
How can 2 modules with different capacities work in dual-channel mode? Maybe 2GB module works with itself in dual-channel but only with 512MB of capacity and the rest is single channel?

Hi, Boris:
No they cannot. You must install memory in matching pairs for DDR to work in dual channel mode.
Also your PC has to support dual channel mode. Just because there are two memory slots and you have DDR, doesn't necessarily mean they are running in dual channel.
The easiest way to determine this if the notebook specs don't list this, is to look in your BIOS and see if the memory reports "Dual Channel."
