Optical drives have more than one laser and it is possible for one of them to go out. What happens when you put in the DVD? Does Windows Explorer recognize that a disk has been inserted? You can be sure it is the hardware (laser) by trying to boot from a bootable DVD like a Windows 7 install disk. If it will boot from DVD you have a software issue not a hardware issue. If it is hardware there is no fix....the drive just has to be replaced.

after trying to read the DVD a message,"insert a new disk" pops up .
I have not tried with a bootable dvds. I will give you the update once I test it.
