Whenever I turn on my Pavilion DV4Z, I get the following message:
The system BIOS has detected your notebook PC was placed in hibernation to avoid overheating. The system is now operating normally and your data should remain intact.
The System Temperature recorded is always "(90D)"
I can't seem to find a way to turn this message off. I haven't had any overheating problems in quite some time, and of course this error pops up a week after my warranty expired.
Any suggestions?

AH! Figured it out-- had to remove power, battery, and the BIOS keep-alive battery, which is under the WWAN door.
Left the machine off for a couple minutes to allow all the electrons to settle, then replaced all the stuff.
Have to hit F10 and redo any special settings you might have (I know, tons for this BIOS) and reset the clock/calendar.
You'll likely get a Checksum Error from the BIOS, just hit F5 and everything should work peachy.

The Msg is related to system's Automated Diag, that is detecting issue with the fan...
I would suggest doing a BIOS update apart for what you have done...

Hrm... Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on one's attitude, I suppose), I am not running Windows on this machine, only Ubuntu. Considering I am not a particular fan of Vista and HP does not provide Win XP drivers for the DV4 platform, I am not likely to install it, either. (nor am I going to pay extortionate amounts of money for Win 7).
I have heard that that BIOS update really screws up the fan settings, that the fan runs at high-speed continuously. Is that true, or has that problem been addressed?

That is not true... the fan is allowed to spin up to the max during BIOS update process...but after that thermal management of the system takes over....Have you experience anything different and is particular to a AMD system...
BTW, I have couple of question for you, What is the model number of your system and while changing your os to ubuntu, did you wipe the hard drive clean and than installed it...

DV4Z-1200, currently with a bad battery.
I am running Ubuntu 10.4 AMD-64 on a 320GB drive partitioned for three OSs (Win XP currently not viable, Ubuntu 9.10 AMD-64).
The original drive and its Vista installation is lost in my garage at the moment.

Part 3 of the XP Downgrade Guide might be useful in getting your XP install more viable.

Update to BIOS solved the "overheat" message. Unfortunately my laptop lost sound after the BIOS update. The problem with sound was resolved by resinstalling the sound driver found on the same page as the BIOS update. THANKS
