Compaq Presario v5305wm Lap Top HD Issues

Is the compaq presario v5305wm lap top compatable to install a 320 gig SATA hard drive?  Have a full back up of the IDE MS Media presently on 60gig IDE hard drive.  Want to install new SATA 7200rpm WD.

No it does not use a SATA hard drive it uses an IDE drive. You can use a 320 gig IDE drive, should not have a BIOS hard drive size limit with that motherboard.

IDE and SATA are different interfaces and not interchangeable.

OK interface. Have 2 PC's no problem installing Sata HD. Want to remove IDE WD 60 gig in V5305VM install 320G|WD Sata  -format/load new WindXP/SP2 or Win Media Edition /SP2 OS. Drive coming UPS.

So you do not need any advice? You went ahead and bought the SATA drive? It will not fit, my friend. The laptop has no SATA port.

Ya, I bought the drive before checking.  Guess I do a RMA and get an IDE..slow IDE.  Is the problem witht he MB in the V5305VM?  Thanks for your input.

Yes the hard drive port is set up to accept an IDE drive and not a SATA. In a desktop you can just use an adapter but the fit is so tight in a laptop there is no way to make an adapter...stuck with what you have. You can RMA it. You will not be the first who ordered a SATA drive but needed an IDE.And by the way, the speed difference between IDE and SATA-I is not that great. You can compensate by getting a 7200 rpm ide drive.

Thanks again Huffer. Newegg delivery comes today and going to RMA tomorrow. Yes, I understand the space issue now that you mentioned it. I'll search out an IDE with space and speed.

Looking at the manual it says the HD Interface is ATA-5.  Looking at Newegg HD they are ATA-6 and go up to 320g for IDE.  Is there a problem with using a ATA-6?  Would the faster Ultra work?

It will downclock to UDMA-5 or the fastest speed the motherboard can support, automatically
