Just want to write down my hp experience.
I was a big HP fan, bought camera, printer and laptop etc from HP. Bought my laptop 4 yrs ago, and battery died after yr 1, just beyond my warantee. To summarize the situation then, the battery would go from fully charged to less than 2% charged within 5 minutes.
Later it got worse, to a point where I insert the battery and the laptop would crash -- basically screen turn black and laptop shutdown unexpectedly. I called Hp and they said there is nothing they could do to replace it, so I threw it away. from then on, i had to run the laptop on AC only.
2 yrs later, hp started the battery recall program. I called, and the rep insisted on getting the battery bar code. I had none. I told the rep, did u really expect me to keep a dead battery for 3 years? she was speechless. I know she is caught in these difficult situation, but I still wished she could have looked up my battery code using my laptop serial number or any other piece of info.
My rational is, if i can produce a valid s/n and p/n, i am proving to HP that I do own one of their laptop, which is listed as a model that could have been affected. and HP knows they packaged some defective battery. why can't hp take a step forward in service and give its customer a working battery?
I later asked the rep whether I could make a complaint. She gave me an US address and said there is no phone number to call. That I found a little rediculus for a large corporation.

The battery recall is for safety issues regarding the possibility of the battery overheating and catching fire. You are required to enter the battery's serial number to determine if it was one of the affected batteries...if so, you would be required to return the defective battery to HP. If you do not have the battery, nothing can or will be done.

I am a IT professional who is responsible for recommending countless amounts of hardware and peripherals, and I can see now why HPs prices are so cheap -- lack of quality build or support.
My client also has already replaced their battery due to the numerous and well-known charging issues. The client recycled the (now useless) battery properly, as anyone would do. HP issuing a late recall and refusing to help affected machines because someone has disposed of the battery due to HP's own faulty hardware is a slap in the face.
First HP's printers went downhill, and now I see they have the same break-and-replace policy with their laptops. Next time, I'll recommend an ASUS.

I have a dv9000. When HP first did the recall my laptop was not included. Year or so later it was. But I had already spent $150 and got another one from Batteries Plus and recycled the HP one. I called HP customer service and she said I needed the number off the back of the battery even though my laptop was clearly one of the ones affected. Whether I have the actual battery or not shouldn't matter. They shipped out a defective product and then because I do the responsible thing and recycled it years before they admit to it I am in the wrong and they won't fix their mistake. I will NEVER EVER buy another HP laptop or any of their products ever again. Ive just added them to the list of companies that don't give a flying F about their customers.
