DV5 1211em

Hey guys,

i'm having some trouble, i bought this laptop around mid feb, but the laptop is getting extremely hot now (85 deg c), i have no idea why.

I've got it setup on a flat service, and this temp. is starting to make me worry. I still have the 1yr manufacturer gaurantee, can anyone advise what i should do. Any help from HP team will be grateful

Re: DV5 1211em

Which CPU and which OS does your laptop have installed?

You might want to  consider updating the BIOS to the latest available one. High temps are one area addressed by BIOS updates. I took a look at all available and did not see it as an area adressed by the updates. If you are using Vista try going into Control Panel --> Power options and selecting a balanced or Power Saver plan instead of Performance.  Check you laptop's BIOS settings to see if there is an available option which will raise your CPU's fan speed based on high CPU utilization. HP's BIOSes don't normally have that option whereas high performance gaming motherboard BIOSes do.

If the problem continues then contact HP product support. 85 deg c is way too hot. What utility are you using that is reporting that temperature?

Re: DV5 1211em

Thank Erico for your reply much appreciated!

http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Hewlett-Packard-Pavilion-dv5-1211em-Laptop-AMD-Athlon-X2-Dual-Core-QL-... This is the exact spec of my pc.

I purchased it from pcworld (UK), and the power setting i am using is the standard hp recommended option, running on Vista home prem.

For some bizarre reason, when i switched the notebook off after posting my earlier message. I placed it onto another table (different surface) and the temperature is running as it usually does. Though, saying that i'm not sure whether 60-65 sometimes 70c is normal temperature for amd dual cores when browsing the internet? I'm monitoring this using 'Speedfan'.

I'm not actually sure of how to check the Bios version, although i now i most likely have the latest version as i'm constantly ensuring my notebook is up to date from using 'HP total care advisor' which comes standard with my notebook.

If i do need to contact HP, do you know where i can find the information, as i was looking for this earlier which led me to this forum.

Thanks

Billy

Re: DV5 1211em

Max temp is 95 deg. C so 60-70 should be fine relative to the max temp. AMD's processors always have run hotter than Intel's. Yours is rated at 35 watts so I would have expected it to run cooler. Look in task manager to see what other processes are occupying your CPU processor cycles that may be making it run at that temp

Re: DV5 1211em

Hold Fn key down and then press Esc. That is the most recent shortcut to BIOS info on HP laptops that I am aware of. Alternatively  you can download and run a utility called CPU-Z . CPU-Z will report your BIOS version and much more information as well.

Re: DV5 1211em

Ok my old bios version was f.23 and i noticed there was a new one f.32 so i done the bios update (surprisingly my total care advisor did not pick this up).

If i do however have problems with this version and i want to put it back, is it simply the case of just downloading f.23 from the hp site and installing that one?

Re: DV5 1211em

i'm only  asking because the system fans sound like they've gone louder, so i'm thinking whether it was better for me to just leave it at f.23

Re: DV5 1211em

[ Edited ]

If the sound from the fans is louder that means the BIOS has sensed the temp increase and ramped up the fan speed. That is to compensate for the temperature and maintain the CPU temp in the optimal range for CPU longevity. CPU longevity means, in a nutshell, the lifetime of your processor. It is your choice, but if there are no oher issues with the new BIOS then keep it.

Save the BIOS ROM file to a thumbdrive or other external storage device so you can downgrade it if you choose to do so at another time.

When you updated the BIOS ROM file, did the utility not ask you if you wish to save it? That is the norm for BIOS update utilities.

Re: DV5 1211em

Hi Erico, No it did not ask me to save, rather told me the current and new bios version.

if i do choose to lower the bios, can this be done the same way i installed the new one (download and simply install), and does this carry any risk?
