Got a HP DV5 for about 2 months. Last week, the trackpad started to have response problems and intermittently would not respond, for the last 2 days, stopped working completely. If I try to turn on/off the gestures on the trackpad control itself, there is no response.
Is this a driver issue, warranty, faulty hardware?
suggestions for next steps?
thanks,

Can you check if the touchpad works in Quickweb or F2 Diagnostics or F11 Recovery Enviroment?

Was the little light on the touchpad blue or orange? If it's orange, it's disabled. Double tap on it to turn the touchpad back on.
I am an HP employee.

Thanks for the quick reply,
Light on the touchpad is off, I can tap as much as I like and it won't respond.
Not sure what Quick web is, but ran the diagnostic and it says there's no problems detected ... however, the message on the screen is for checking memory problems so not sure if this has anything to do with the touchpad. (ran the extended test)
Any suggestions?

Have you change the operating system on this notebook?
And does your F2 Dignosities look like this?

Startup menu looks like the one you have. Mouse cursor is not available in diagnostic mode.

Also, running Windows 7 (OEM version) ... nothing changed. Only thing I've added are a bunch of app software (office, visio, lightroom, etc) nothing new was installed in the last month.
thanks,

OK...Lets check in Recovery Enviroment...To get into in there On Power On Tap the ESC Key, That will take you to Startup Menu, Now Press the F11 Key, This will launch Recovery Environment. Check if the touchpad works here...

Not sure what the recovery maintenance screen is suppose to look like, but after F11, goes to the HP alternative O/S startup screen (ie, the screen where you can choose Mail/Web/Music) on regular startups.
Mouse cursor is visible, but touchpad is still dead.
is it a hardware issue?

OH OK...So the screen where you can choose Mail/Web/Music is what I am talking at 1st. That is called Quickweb... What I am looking to understand is touchpad works in quickweb or not, that will tell us if we Hardware issue...
