I have to get a new CMOS chip, and since I was in the neiborhood I was wondering which motherboards I could swap to as an upgrade. With a faster processor, and a better video card.
The DV9600 look like they are similar.

There are very slight differences between the older dv9000 series that you have and the dv9500 series which make the motherboards incompatible between the two series. You already have the best motherboard made for the dv9000 series...Intel CPU and nVidia GeForce 7600. The T5500 processor is a dog and you might want to consider an upgrade to a T7200 which is as good as you can go on it. The video cannot be upgraded. The best you can do is an exact replacement of the original board. The "best" motherboard is actually the Intel with Intel graphics.....they do not fail like the ones with nVidia graphics, but almost impossible to find and, of course they are not capable of any kind of gaming at all.

I've been doing research into this upgrade also. It seems the motherboard upgrade is really a no go.
what I have been told as you said is go to a T7200 processor.
Also, it has been recommended to go to: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 RAM.
Which is the better bang for the buck for performance increase??
I am also adding a 500 GB hybrid harddrive. 7200 rpm spindle speed.
Just trying to give the old dog some new legs as a second laptop.

I think it maxes at 3 gigs of RAM and only runs at 667 speed with a BIOS update. The 7200 rpm hybrid drive actually provides quite a performance jump over a 5400 rpm drive. So max out the RAM and put in the speedy hard drive and it is a very useable laptop. The processor upgrade is a huge hassle....the DV9000 is a laptop that separates the amateur laptop tech from the professional; it is a bear to get apart and reassemble.
