Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

ISO? Hmmmm....all of this sounds foreign to me. But I'll give it a try. I thought I could just speak with Mirosoft and that they would be able to assist me with this. Apparently I need to do quite a lot!

Just how difficult is this for a beginner like myself? I mean, I know how to do many other things but rebooting, setting up, DL software, creating a bootable disk etc.....sounds pretty tough. I hope I can get it done soon.

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

Microsoft isn't going to help you.

You would have to buy a whole version of Windows 7, and there is no need to do that.

Remember to download the Home Premium 64 bit English ISO file toward the bottom of the link above.

If you use the program I posted to burn your downloaded ISO file, it will be very easy to do.

There is a Burn ISO image menu on the burning program menu--4th item down.

You make the DVD and boot from it and install windows.

Then go to your notebook's support and driver page and install any drivers you are missing.

Install the chipset driver first before installing any other. Then graphics, then audio.

You're running with the big dogs now...

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

Ok! Man, you are better than any customer service Ive ever spoken too! You are making me feel confident in actually getting this up and running again. I just hope this works and its all that was wrong with my laptop. Id hate to take it in for "repair" and be charged a boatload to fix it. So, Thank you very much. Its much appreciated. Will keep you posted. I plan on DLing all that possibly tomorrow.

You're most welcome.

Thank you for the compliment.

I'm pretty sure you are going to be fine.

I am also pretty sure of something else...you will never drop another laptop again in your life.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

Well it asked me where I wanted to install windows. I wasnt sure where to install it. One option had 68GB with 28 GB available which was labeled Primary. The other had 600 some odd GB avaialbe. Thoughts on where and why I should install this? And I burned the ISO at 8x. Is that slow enough?

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

Hi:

The fact that windows is asking you questions means you did a good job burning the disk.

If you hadn't, the DVD wouldn't either boot or you would be getting errors.

I don't get why you are getting those options on a new disk. You should have the whole 600+ gigabytes available and one partition.

Here is what I would do. Read this link and select the Drive Options (advanced install). Delete all partitions on the drive, and make one big one. Then install Windows.

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

Ok. Here is the update. Windows installed fine, I assume. Now I need to install drivers etc. My issue is, where to start and how and where to go etc. I was trying to get the laptop to sign online via wireless connection, but I dont know what I am doing. Also, I have it connected via Ethernet cable and Im trying everything I know....Ok well, Im guessing on what to do.

Sorry I need to see step by step actions or I wont get it :/

Re: Dropped laptop; system will not reboot

[ Edited ]

You're doing good!

I just remembered why you had more than one big partition.  That was because you ran the recovery disk and it created a recovery partition and one for the OS, then it bombed out.

So, read that tutorial, delete all the partitions, create one big one so the only thing you see is the one drive. When you delete all and then create the one new one, it should default to the maximum size.

But I always click the Up arrow in the box to make sure it is at the biggest #.  :smileyhappy:

Then, after you reinstall W7 (you're getting good at this, aren't you), go to your device manager and you will see all of the hardware listed that needs drivers.  They will all be listed with generic descriptions and have little yellow ! marks next to each of them.

Those are the guys that need drivers, plus your video, which probably won't be showing in the device manager with a little yellow ! mark, but it will be listed under the display adapters section as a Standard VGA controller and your graphics will not look right.

I realize you can't get online, so grab another PC, get a portable USB flash drive, go to your notebook's support and driver page at the link below, and download the driver files onto your portable usb flash drive, plug that into your rebuilt PC, and install the drivers in this following order...

Main driver page...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5051...

1. Chipset driver. Install and reboot.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-83348-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

2. Video driver. Install and reboot.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-91877-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

3. Intel Turbo Boost Technology driver. Install and reboot.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-86691-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

4.  Audio (Realtek). Install and reboot.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-89954-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

5. Wired Network:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-90547-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

6. IMEI driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-83746-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

7.  Realtek card reader driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-83237-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

Optional: Touchpad driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-89374-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=

Now, those should take care of most of your missing drivers.

But the wireless card, you ask...

OK, since there could be one of several wireless cards in your notebook, I'll teach you a little trick to identify what model it is and this applies to any other remaining devices that may still have little yellow ! marks next to them.

I don't own your PC, so I am doing all of the above based on what drivers I think you need for that model.

You will surely have one device labeled Network Controller with the little yellow ! mark.  That is your wireless card.

So, click on that device in the device manager. Then click on the Details tab. You will now see a Properties drop down list. Drop down on that list, and select the second item (Hardware ID's).

Post the top string of characters you see in the window. Those will identifty the model of the wireless card, and I will send you the link to the drivers you need.

Do this for any other remaining devices marked with the little yellow ! mark, after you install all of the drivers I posted above.

Paul
