Hello, I am new here so be gentle ![]()
I have just bought second hand a Compaq Presario 6240EA, motherboard is a Compaq 07D0h.
In the hardware - device manager, it shows 'Other devices' - Ethernet Controller, with a large yellow question mark and exclamation mark.
Details in properties show the following: drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01C3&SUBSYS_00A80E11&REV_C2\3&13C
I have search the HP and Compaq websites for driver downloads and have downloaded all the nVidia drivers available on the Compaq site, none of which improve the situation.
Would there be somewhere else to look, I am at my wits end with this, any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in anticipation.

Have you tried:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp20501-21000/sp20952
If it fails to install driver, use Device Manager and Update driver on it.
Device Manager>Ethernet device
Right click, Update Driver
Say "no, not at this time" for connecting to Windows Update
Select> Install from a list or specific location
Select> Don't search I will choose the driver to install
In the list of common hardware types, choose "show all"
Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk"
Next...browse to C:\Swsetup\sp20952
Choose the "inf" and ignore any protest from XP
Reboot.

Hello CherylG,
Thank you for replying, I followed the instructions to the letter, and everything went according to plan, up until the "Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk" point.
The display I had on the screen did not say 'Show Compatible Hardware', although it did have the button for "Have Disk".
I am running Windows XP Home Edition if this makes any differance?
I tried to just press "Have Disk" but i was unable to locate the file I had downloaded, mainly because it automatically went to "Files of type" = Setup Information [*.inf], from which i couldn't change, so it wouldn't locate the file.
Anything else I could try? Thank you for your help, take care.

Try something like the free 7Zip to open the sp file and extract it to a folder. Then use the Have Disk and browse to the unzipped files.
Not sure when you ran it but it probably extracted somewhere. On many machines it extracts to C:\Compaq\Drivers so you might check to see if it is there somewhere.

I am having the same problem with a compaq presario running 32bit Vista home premium
the wifi button and light on the front edge are both orange. I press the button and nothing happens.
in the device manager, the ethernet controller isn't working due to drivers not being installed.
I have net when its plugged in, but wifi isn't happening.
The router is working as my other computer is getting the net over it.
I tried uninstalling the ethernet and then it comes back with pnp, but asks for a disk that I don't have.
help

Please start your own thread rather than opening old ones back up. Also provide your full model number particularly when asking about hardware function which may involve drivers. We have to know precisely what hardware we are dealing with. Like the posts above, you may want to include the hardware id of the affected device.
