Fan shuts down when Windows XP sp3 starts

Compaq Presario 715US.

Recently crashed and reloaded Windows XP SP3 + updates/drivers from Compaq site.

Everything seems fine EXCEPT the fan will not run when Windows is running. When in the BIOS the fan comes on and stays on. When exiting BIOS to Windows, the fan will stay on for a minute or so and then turns off, never to come back on. Naturally in a warm room after awhile the system crashes.

 

I have GOOGLED and found one other person having the problem on a Compaq machine but no solution posted.

 

My assumption is that I have not actually got all the drivers necessary, but need a hint as to what to do next.
