Dv7 3165dx notebook computer fan will not turn off. It is constatnly on and is quite loud. I have tried cleaning it out which did not work. The computer is not overheating, and is in fact quite cool. Could somebody please help me out?

Re: Fan will not shut off

Hi Pete,

This is not meant to be a rude question: what would you like done?

The fan may be working correctly and just be unfortunately LOUD.

The question is, then, is the LOUD fan a new issue... or has this dv7 always been this noisy?

If you can do so, you might take that loud, cool notebook to a repair shop and have the tech in the shop just listen to it.  He / She might not even charge you for that once you explain that you just need someone to listen to it for a minute and give you an opinion on "is this LOUD", or what?

Why?  Because one of my notebooks is a dv7t-6100 and I have to say the fan on this thing is not jet plane loud, but it does run all the time and when it kicks up into high, it does get my attention.

Here are the docs on "All things Fans":

Reducing Fan Noise Notebooks (Windows 7)

Here is the Cool Sense Tech doc.  Depending on which CoolSense version you have, you can fuss with the controls and turn up/down your fan settings.  Personally, I would never set my fan on anything except "cool" mode.  I would rather the system be cool than have it be quiet and get hot.

About CoolSense Technology

I won't bother with the "fan runs all the time and PC is hot" doc.  You don't have that issue....

I hope this helps!

Re: Fan will not shut off

I have the exact same problem. It usually happens upon waking up from sleep, even if it were for hours and the computer is quite cool. It's definitely not related to heat since restarting the computer usually means the fan shuts up for quite a while. My fan is not super loud but the fact that is running all the time is annoying and depending on the direction of my ears, I can pick up a high frequency whistle that can irritate my ear quite much.
