G70 460US DVD/CD drive will not read/write some discs

I'm having problems with my G70 460US Lightscribe DVD/CD drive reading or writing to some discs.  This is not a problem with recognizing the drive; the drive will read and write to some discs.

I did a chat session with the HP Support folks, but the final answer came down to the fact that HP drives will not read Memorex or Verbatim discs.  Or any disc that is of an undefined, particular thickness.  This seems to include many of the commercial software discs, like Quicken or some commercially produced music CDs and DVDs. 

I'm well satisfied in other respects over this machine.  But, I need to have the ability to load software/data off of commercially produced discs.  And, somehow, it does not make sense to me that HP would have a product out there that could not read or write to 2 of the world's largest manufacturers of DVD/CD disks.

So, a couple of questions:

Is this a fairly common problem with the G70 drive?  (I did a search on the forum, but did not find a single other listing - that may be my search criteria, however.)

If this is a common problem, is there a fix for it?

Of course, I can always get an external drive, but that's more to carry and power.  I want to use the drive on my notebook. I'd appreciate any comments or advice.

Not a single reply to the query, so I'll assume that means it isn't a common situation or the normal operation of the drive.  Looks like I'm going back to HP Support to see if I can get a replacement drive to fix this issue.

My dvd burner since I bought it would go in and out on working I took it several times to the Geek Squad and they would run a disc in it and it would start working.  and the next day be gone again and tried several times to look up information on how to fix it could not find  it .  Now I've paid HP $99 to tell me it is a bad dvd burner and need a new one but it is now out of warntey and have to buy it myself.  I barely had the $99 for them to tell me that's what I needed.  Now I have no Idea when I can get it fixed I probably could have bought it if I hadn't paid them the $99 dollars.  Frustrated in Missouri

I'm sorry to hear that .  I was lucky that mine was under warranty.  It was a bad drive and the replacement drive that was sent by HP works perfectly.  My experience with HP support was very good.  It took a bit of time to work through all the questions, but once we determined that it was bad, they promptly sent a new one out.

Since Geek squad gave you bad information, i.e., the DVD/CD drive really was bad, can you speak to them?  They may be able to help with a good drive in the interest of good customer service.   The only other option that I can think of that  might work is to try to find an inexpensive used drive from one of the local computer shops in your area or on the net.
