Genuin -v- proprietary batteries

I have now purchased two proprietary batteries for my NX7400 laptop but neither will charge. The NX7400 isn't listed in the parts section so I can't get an original HP if I wanted to, so what next? Chuck away the the laptop and buy a more sensible one (shame because the NX7400 is faultless otherwise) or should I jury-rig a 12 v car battery? Bit heavy to lug around though...

Has anyone else had this problem or is it peculiar to the NX7400?

I've tried all the usual gambits of unistalling battery monitors from Device Manager etc, BIOS is up-to-date and I have the same problem with the docking station as well as the power adaptor. The original battery still takes a charge but dies after about 30 minutes, and HP Battery Check utility says that it has a duff cell, so the charging system is OK - I think HP have banjo-ed the system to stop us buying non HP kit!
