HP G72 laptop hard drive limits

[ Edited ]

I own an HP G72 laptop (G72-B60US) and would like to know what the biggest hard drive is that it can handle without diminishing performance. The good folks at hp tell me a 750 GB/5400 rpm hdd is the limit. However they couldn't answer my deeper questions as they basically are reading from a script. Ideally I'd like to run a 1 TB/7200 rpm hdd or a 750 GB/7200 rpm hdd. I suspect if performance actually would suffer from a "too big" hard disc drive it's due to the limits of the processor. So if anyone knows for sure whether or not a large capacity 1TB/7200 rpm hard drive will work in my particular laptop, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thank You

Bruce

Re: HP G72 laptop hard drive limits

The problem is not the capacity or the speed of the drive it is the physical dimensions. Last time I checked, the 1 tb 2.5 inch drives are too thick to be used in laptops; they are more for servers and such. The largest capacity drives which are the same dimensions as your original drive (2.5 inches wide and 9 or 9.5 mm thick) is a 750 gig. You can safely use this drive, for example:

Scorpio Black on newegg

Ok I also checked newegg for 1 tb drives and they do have 1 tb 9.5 mm drives but nothing running at 7200 rpm; they are 5400s. Personally I would rather have the 750 gig 7200 rpm than a 1 TB 5400...I will only use 7200 rpm drives.
