My HP Pavilion DV8T-1000 CTO laptop F3, F6, & F10 keys don't work in windows or the BIOS setup.
These keys will work IF an adjacent key is pressed first. For example pressing the F2 and holding it down will let the F3 work.
(Discovered this using a keytest program downloaded from CNET)
The FN+F3 key WILL open Internet Explorer and FN+F6 WILL lock the laptop.
I've done the "hard reset" procedure (remove battery, external power, and hold down the power button for 15 sec then plug in external power without the battery) with NO change to the problem.
I've went to the BIOS setup by pressing ESC during startup. But pressing F10 doesn't take me to the BIOS setup. I press the key but nothing happens and have to press ESC to continue the bootup.
My laptop warranty expired 12/16/2010.
Do I need to replace the keyboard? Do I need to send it in to HP or find a local HP authorized repairman?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris Hutchinson

Keyboards are a breeze to replace, just don't break the ZIF connectors. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, go somewhere local, don't send it in as it may be awhile to get it back. Plus you support your local economy.

I replaced my keyboard today and my laptop works OK.
The hardest part of the keyboard replacement is removing the keyboard cover.
The HP manual instructs simply:
"Release the keyboard cover by lifting the front edge until it rests at an angle. Lift the keyboard cover as far as the LED board cable allows. Disconnect the LED board cable from the low insertion force connector."
The keyboard cover has tabs under the laptop case and I thought I was going to break the keyboard cover trying to release it from the laptop. I nearly gave up but I keep trying as gently as I could and got it released.
Is there a special tool that makes this any easier?
It's really hard to get the keyboard cover loose and the HP manual makes NO mention about the tabs. The keyboard cover goes back on much easier than it comes out.
Thanks,
Chris

I use a Spudger, it has a flat plastic end that is perfect for prying up keyboard bezels, LCD bezels, and top covers.
