HP Pavilion dv5t CDDVD RW Drive Issues

My HP Pavilion dv5t seems to be having issues with the CD/DVD Drive.

  • First, the drive opens at seemingly random instances while the drive is not in use.  This includes with both media in the drive or while empty without anyone using the laptop.  Only occurs when the laptop is on (thankfully).

  • Secondly, it is no longer able to burn CDs.  The drive reads data just fine, but when I try to burn CDs through Windows (or other software; i.e. Nero) I receive an error.  (With Windows: "Windows was Unable to Format the Disc)

The device is a TSSTcorp CDDVDDW TS-L633A

The device is supposedly "working properly".  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and using different CDs to write the data to.  Please advise with any suggestions.  Thanks in advance.

Try pop out the DVD drive unit and insert again, it might just be it's not seated well. If that doesn't help, maybe you have to get a replacement drive.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5t CDDVD RW Drive Issues

My dv5 CDDVD driver stopped working alltogether - I just bout the system 1.5 months ago.  The driver information pop-up says: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."   I took it to the place of purchase and their first response was to scrub the HD and relaoad everything(??).  Seems awfully extreme, but I can't find the driver available anywhere on-line.  Anyone had similar experience?  Thanks in advance.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5t CDDVD RW Drive Issues

I'm having the exact same issues as Hasbro and my laptop is also about 1.5 months old. The issues seem to have started after a recent windows update but removing the updates didn't help. Using system restore to roll back almost a month fixed the problem temporarily but if any windows update is applied the drivers break again immediately. Even if i don't install a windows update, the drivers eventually go bad again and i have to restore again.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5t CDDVD RW Drive Issues

Hi, after reading these posts I discovered that the problem I had with my new laptop was the same as everyone else in this thread.

I read the post from HP help and figured I did not want to mess with the registry and doing a reload is just plain stupid since Vista will do another update again.

I took my Compaq laptop back to Best Buy where I had bought it 3 months ago and told them what I had seen in the forum and they

have a system registry recover disk they installed it and found 2 problems and it cured my laptop blues and they did mine for free.  They also mentioned if anyone else has a Microsoft update that ruined the use of their laptop dvd drive to bring it in the Best Buy stores and they would do the easy fix for free.  Good Luck on getting it free but hey it is worth a try!

Re: HP Pavilion dv5t CDDVD RW Drive Issues

I have this model of notebook and i had not used it in 2yrs and since i did my updates my CD/DVD drive will not work. Has there been any simple type of solutions since this problem occured? I would think HP would have a free update of some kind to resolve this conflict. Thanks for any information about this problem.
