HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Hello,

I have a HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB notebook. My harddrive recently failed("SMART Failure detected Press F1 to continue"). So I called the HP customer care to find if I can get a replacement harddrive from them. They say it costs $533.33. But I find cheap deals in internet for Notebook hard drives. How can I check if those drives are compatible with my system. I have listed a few drives below. Let me know if anyof them are compatible with my Notebook. Also I guess the size does matter, or is it that every harddrive for notebooks are of standard sizes? Mine is a 15.4'' Notebook. My hard drive information: 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive.

These are the drives that I found as notebook hard drives:

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook HardHard Drive - OEM

 500GB

 7200 RPM 16MB Cache

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 320GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive ... - OEM

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

 500GB

 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

HITACHI 250GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

 250GB

 7200 RPM

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

Western Digital Scorpio 160GB 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

 160GB

 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

 SATA 1.5Gb/s

Western Digital Scorpio 160GB 2.5" ATA-6 Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

 160GB

 5400  RPM 8MB Cache

 ATA-6

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Retail

 320GB

 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

 My Product Number is RS085AV

Please let me know if I can trust and buy a hard drive online and if it will be compatible.

Thanks,
Rammy

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Hi,

You've got nForce630M (mcp67m) chipset so Your model supports Sata 2 (3Gb/s) and size doesn't metter.

I will recommend You disks with 5400 rpm because disks with 7200 rpm may raise Your laptop temp.

So this two models will be the best choice from Your list:

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

 500GB

 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Retail

 320GB

 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

 SATA 3.0Gb/s

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Agreed with Daniel. Laptop SATA hard drive is a generic industry standard; all are physically interchangeable. I might disagree about the 7200 rpm. The extra heat is negligible and the extra performance is noticeable, but so is the cost so you might want to stick at a 5400 rpm drive. I happen to like Seagates because they have the longest warranty but frankly, no current laptop hard drive seller is making a bad product.

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Daniel and Huffer are correct.   But there are a couple things to consider before replacing your drive.   First is how big of a drive do you need and how much longer do you intend to keep your laptop before replacing it?  Does it make sense to pay for a drasticly larger drive if you are not going to fill it? Secondly, the larger the drive the longer it takes to perform maintenance...   These are things you will have to decide for yourself as only you know how you use your LT and how long you intend to keep it before upgrading. As far as the drive speed goes, unless you are loading large files or a massive number of them this isreally a non issue with a modern  drive. Were you talking about a desktop or desktop replacement with a large harddrive such as 500 gig and over, then it becomes a consideration, as simple drive optimization can keep things running up to par... something far too many people neglect and look to hardware speed to solve instead.  Being in the business My personal recommendation is not to go larger than double the original drive size  unless you absolutely need to (again smething you must deside on), and stick to the drive speed you start with as going faster will impact your battery life, slower is ok but try not to go faster unless again it is needed (once again, you must decide).   I have had excellent experiences  with the Hitachi drives, above the other manufacturers, so I would look there first. There is a reason why they are chosen by the biggest name in the portable computing arena above all others.

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Thanks a lot guys. I have an AMD Turion 64 X2 which heats so badly. So any little heat generated is a problem. So I plan to get 5400 RPM itself and the smallest size.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Here is service documentation (Fan/heat sink assembly page 86) to Your model. You may have problem with dust. You may also try to put new paste on chipset and processor. Do it only if You really think then You can do it.

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Hi,

This is my hard disks exact product name. I disassebled it today.

SEAGATE 160GB MOMENTUS 5400.3 SATA 8MB MOBILE HD

They ask me to replace with HP original spare. Can I get a hard disk from a store and replace it? Some hard disks say that they are SATA2 and can I still use that with mine. I ask so much, coz I don't want to risk buying an item which I wont be able to use.

Thanks,

Ramesh

This what HP told is not true. You can buy any disk You want from any store and it will be working for 100%.

Re: HP Pavilion dv6500z CTO NB - Can I buy a internal Harddrive from Samsung

Thanks Daniel. SATA 2 / 3 doesn't matter? Actually it was the sticker on the hard drive which made me think so that I should get a HP original spare.
