This is my first post on these boards so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place.
Basically a couple of days ago I tried to power up my laptop but after 10-15 seconds of startup all of a sudden it just powered off. When not connected to the AC the laptop will not come on at all and when it is connected to the AC it shuts down within seconds. The light around the AC cable is on and the power lights are on but it just won't power up.
Has anyone else ever heard of this problem?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

have similar problem
not sure if you should be able to
power up a HP PAVILLION -DV5-1120US laptop
with battery removed
to then conclude its a dead battery ?
but I cannot power up with/or without battery installed,
so I am assuming it needs new battery

Hi, Welcome to my world. I have been on the phone and on-line with tech support from HP for 2 days now with this exact issue. Now my computer won't turn on at all. It started off by randomly shutting down at any point (while booting up, or when I was logged into Vista, etc.). After talking to a local non-HP tech in my city, he said the Pavilion laptops have been notorious for this and only way to fix is basically send it in to HP ($200+). There are certain models where hp has extended the warranty an extra year as it is a known issue with them, so you may want to call HP canada (look up on their website under Offices in Canada, don't call general HP help or you will get some overseas call centre). Not sure why they won't extend it to all pavilion series since it is a know issue. Guess us consumers get screwed again. Anyways, it was something about a graphic chip overheating and motherboard will probably have to be changed. It actually sounds quite easy to send off (they send a box with all shipping papers to you). It's just the cost that is upsetting since we just bought this in 2008. Next computer = iMac
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

p.s. One thing I forgot to mention is that my power cord was plugged in. I tried with/without battery and it still won't turn on. Light around the area where you plug the cord in IS on, so power is getting to the computer but somehow not getting through the computer to work. .

Very nearly the same issue...
Cannot start the computer at all... Happened without warning... Worked one minute, not the next...
When I try to power up, all the red lights across the top of the function keys come on for a second... then the hard disk blinks one tiny blink and the whole thing shuts back off... the light where the power plug is inserted is the only light that remains lit...
I was told HP service started at $300 for this model... has anyone heard anything different... or had success in getting their laptop revived from the dead???
Thanks for any help in this matter...
This is my 3rd HP laptop and I'm soooo disappointed in this one and the service that has gone along with it...

My symptoms are identical to yours. Hp is wanting to charge $250 to fix. I think we are the lucky ones because after doing research many people were charged around $700 for the exact same thing. It's even more discouraging to research it and see the large amount of people this has happened to and the fact that HP won't stand by their product. I think I will pass on getting it fixed and buy a mac at this point. Sucks because it was only 18 months old. At least a tech can recover the data on the hard drive if you want to do that and buy a different brand. I really wouldn't bother with the fix because it will just happen again....someone in another post said they did the fix for $700 and it happened again a few months later.

My model is the dv51120us. I just got it in Jan of 2009, About 6 months ago (maybe longer) I started experiencing abnormal, all of a sudden shutting down. First the screen would go black, then the blue light (wireless light ) would go out, then it turned orange, and then my laptop just shut off, dead, nothing! I could be in the middle of something and it just shut down. I finally bought a battery (they're not cheap!). The same thing happen, just shut off, but surprisingly it is staying on long enough to write this blog. I'm surprised. But i don't know how long this will last. I need a dependable laptop. I can't be doing my classwork and my laptop just shut off. I have read all the of blogs and we ALL seem to have similar or the same problem. I will take the advice and look into sending it back to Canada. Or I might just buy a Sony or Dell, or something other than a HP!
