Same problem here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.
Setup:
HP Pavillion DV9888eo, AMD Turion TL-60 x2, 3GB RAM
Western Digital My Book Mirror 1T connected to USB 2.0
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (clean install)
Problem:
- Won't pass the boot screen if external hard drive is connected to any USB port
- Boot freezes, BIOS detects the drive, shows USB 2.0: WD My Book, fan becomes louder
Solution tried:
- Different USB ports
- Varied boot order, set internal hd first
- Unplug and boot continues
- Wireless USB mouse at the same time / plug, unplug, almost worked
Works okey if plugged later when Windows has loaded (also works right after when plugged after BIOS passed).
Closest match: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Hard_Drive
Any advice how to resolve?

My conclusion: HP BIOS/USB controller is not working okey with WD My Book when booting the computer. If you wait about 3-4 minutes, the boot will resume. If you recreate partition under Windows 7 you might be able to speed up the process. I converted MBR to GPT (Google more) and reformatted it NTFS. That shortened boot time and is because of a GPT formatted drive, can't be a boot drive. Now there's about 1 min delay. If there would have been a switch to turn off USB Legacy support, that could have helped. There is not, thanks to crappy HP BIOS. One can also search Western Digital support and find out interesting things.
So, eventually it will pass the boot.

I am having the same problem with my Pavilion DV6700t and WD My Book Essential 1TB external HDD; won't pass boot if the My Book is connected. Don't know why this post is marked as "Solved" because it sounds as if it isn't. Everything works fine after Bootup. This problem did not exist when I was running Vista, only after clean install of Windows 7. Common denominator seems to be HP BIOS and WD My Book. I downloaded the latest F.58 BIOS before the clean install of Windows 7. HP had me replace some drivers, and apply the Ricoh 5-1 Card Reader drivers. I also found that the Base system device driver issues (exclamation points) were resolved by Updating SES driver from the My Book VCD. So after all drivers problems are resolved, still can't boot with My Book connected and HP has no other guesses.

Same Here.
Setup:
HP EliteBook8540w , Win7Pro 64bit
totally new install/setup of windows
Mybook essential 3T USB 3/2 (==A)
+
Mybook Mirroredition 2T USB 2 (==B)
I disabled 'USB device Boot' and moved 'USB Hard Drive' at the bottom of the Legacy Boot Order List. No effect at all.
Its Booting with B
It is stuck in the first screen with A forever. (max time i waited ~20-30min)
WHY?
I want this newly bought 3Tdrive to work properly with my new PC!

UPDATE:
It only happens when the WD essential drive is connected to the USB 3 ports of my Elitebook.
If it is connected to USB 2 it boots just fine...
Can this be some sort of USB 3 Driver Problem??

Any updates around this issue? I have it and I've tried everything mentioned in posts here all all over the 'Cyber'.
Thanks.
