A little disclaimer on this post would be nice. For those of you (like me) who had no idea what "re-flowing a gpu" is:
1. The GPU is the the Graphics Processing Unit (or your video chip). That I already knew.
2. Re-Flowing is an unexact science that involves anything from doing something that will overheat your "GPU" to cause it to re-solder itself, to actually taking a soldering iron to your laptop components.
To the original poster, your information may actually be helpful to a few people, but you should at least give some kind of indication that this is a somewhat complicated process and could void the warrenty if you still have one.

I have recently encountered the same issues and tried every fix posted on this site and others, found aintresting article, http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/index.html I truly believe this problem is hardware related, (motherboard ,chip set, ect.) if it was software related there would be a fix. Hp should take notice with powerful media like twitter and face book ,bad press will effect market share. I don’t think I will ever buy a hp product again.

I downloaded the CD-DVD fix listed above and it fixed my problem. This is the third time that I had this problem. I have gone through HP chat the other times. They always wanted me to use the Recovery that came with the computer. That had so much junk on it, I wouldn't do it. Both times I finally got a link to a site that had the download to fix it. It may have been this same zip file. This time I saved it. I know I will need it again. Thanks for the solution.

I've tried all of these fixes. Anyone know if it is defect of this particular laptop?
In addition to the drive issue, there are problems with the computer powering back up especially when either:
1. i do a restart
2. it goes to sleep
I believe i've seen issues that this was/is a defective laptop. I will inquire further.
NO DVD yet. Grr.

I have got HP Pavilion dv9700, windows Vista, and same problem with DVD. But when I restart laptop, it works fine until it starts screen saver?! After screen saver I have no DVD.
But first problem started 6 months ago, my screen started being blank. Computer was working fine just needed to connect it to TV or some other screen. So after long search online found someone who realized that screen was to cold!! Can you believe that?! And someone earlier on post said it is to hot and it unsoldering itself. So I used my wife’s hair drier. When I heat it up well, screen started working. And not long ago my HP scanjet 4370 stopped working, some ActiveX can’t be found. But scanning through widows “paint” it works fine. So to save myself time and money, need to save up and buy something else than HP, maybe Toshiba?
My guess is that windows or hp updates did something wrong, or they are not compatible with each other. As everything was working fine with hair drier until 3 weeks ago.
Who knows maybe I need to heat up DVD as well, well next is scanner going into the oven gas mark 7! Hope you found your solutions guys.

I noticed that no one mentioned simply going into the device manager and updating the drivers through that. Mine stopped working this morning, and that's all I had to do. You can tell you need to update or fix something when there's this little yellow triangle that pretty much looks like it's saying "HELP ME OMG PLEASEEE!!".
Just for people in the future ![]()

So I have had this problem for a few days now. After doing everything posted in this thread and countless other things I found 1 fix but said filters were not in my registry (under that certain folder) So I decided to branch off on my own and ended up fixing the problem =D
Here is the article with the fix that has worked for many people http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-12954-dvd-rw-wi
Only instead of finding "Upperfilter" in that registry I found it in the disk drive registry {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
I deleted it and BAM problem solved.
