Re: HP dv2000/6000/8000/9000/tx1000 Video Problems

I had a  laptop in this series dv2415 which did this several times within its warranty period and as repaired, with the SAME defective parts 3 times. The warranty was extended 6 months beyond an extended warranty but is now out of date had a cooler attached to the bottom of the laptop, too.

If you will search this forum there is a fix if the unit is not completely fried. I do not have the details but it entails the lack of and adequate heat sink around the GPU . The fix is quite simple  and can be bought on eBay consisting of some small copper strips and proper type adhesive. It requires some soldering so I have not yet fix it .

I quite using it after last repair begin to exhibit similar bad behavior. I am waiting until I find a computer nerd who can solder better than I can. May soldering is like my painting, all over the place, except where it should be.

Should you be able to fix it buy the biggest cooler you can find and attach it firmly with velcro to the bottom of your laptop.

Re: HP dv2000/6000/8000/9000/tx1000 Video Problems

I'd like to introduce myself and my HP HDX9000T 20.1" notebook that became a very expensive 15lb paperweight just last week due to a defective Nvidia 8800m GTS GPU.

This notebook is just a little over 2-years old and it is exhibiting the symptoms as described for the manufacturing defect. I am using the machine to type this, but the screen could blank out, display weird patterns, AND hard lock at any moment so I am typing in Notepad and saving...A LOT.

I've scoured the net on this issue and it would appear that HP will not fix the affected notebooks if they are not on the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement list or the standard warranty has run out. This is nothing short of a slap in the face to HP's customers because Nvidia has publically stated that they handed out millions of dollars to OEMs to cover the cost of replacing the defective GPUs, yet it sounds like HP is using any excuse they can to not fix the problem so they can pocket the money.

This notebook was purchased as a DTR and I've really enjoyed it the last couple of years. In fact, despite being gainfully employed the largest chip manufacturer on the planet and having access to the latest technology...CHEAP, I fully intended to use it as my main workstation for at least another two years. It was that good! Now however, I am going to replace it with a real desktop but it will not be an HP desktop, it will be custom built by yours truly just like I've always done for the last 20+ years. I just wanted something different when I bought the HDX.

I am beyond disappointed in HP for not replacing defective GPUs out of warranty. These machines were sold to customers with a serious manufacturing defect that Nvidia will pay to correct yet HP is telling customers to go screw themselves. That doesn't fly with me and I will not be purchasing from them again...EVER. I'd also like to add that several people have purchased from HP based on my reccommendation and I fully regret that now. These recommendations will not be coming from me again...EVER.

Oh an btw, about the BIOS update that is suggested on the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement site, that just forces the GPU fan to run at full speed all the time. It would appear that HP is hoping that it will prolong the inveitable long enough to put the machine out of warranty so they don't have to fix it.

So HP, I am guessing that this post won't last very long here on "your" site. That's fine, I saved it so I can post it somewhere else if necessary.

Re: HP dv2000/6000/8000/9000/tx1000 Video Problems

Well, some of you are in luck. A settlement was announced, and a some of the affected models will be replaced at no cost. Check out http://www.nvidiasettlement.com for information.

Sadly, I have a dv9335nr, which isn't covered under the settlement. So, I'll get on with life, and never buy an HP or NVIDIA product again. It's getting to the point where there are very few companies I will purchase from anymore.

Looks like HP just lost another customer, and I will encourage everyone I know (and working in the IT industry, I know a LOT) to not buy HP or NVIDIA products.

If you're one of the lucky people covered, congratulations, and enjoy your new laptop!

Re: HP dv2000/6000/8000/9000/tx1000 Video Problems

You are most likely covered.
I have a DV6375us product number RV212UA,  check the NVIDIA settlement website my laptop isn't covered!
Checking the HP parts site my chipset is listed as G72M
which is the code name for NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 is actually listed as faulty

So check to make sure that though ur laptop wasn't listed that the chipset is listed as faulty!

Then you have a case like me!

You may need to find the code name for your chipset as I did  :-)

This is pure CRAP put out by a company that could care squat about your problems.  My greatest regret is that I have bought three HP's.  If I can help HP fail, it will indeed be my pleasure.  My dv 9000 is going in the trash because I refuse to put any more money in it!!

Total BS! My model isn't covered? Seriously? F HP and F nVidia. My model (EZ345AV DV9000) isn't covered and it's on it's SECOND motherboard. What a terrible company... Do what I've done, convince  your employer never to do business with HP again (easier for me since I'm the network admin at my company but still, find someone to vent to!)

Re: HP dv2000/6000/8000/9000/tx1000 Video Problems

DO go to any web page selling your model machine and rate it for potential buyers!  Or rate any HP machine as totally unacceptable.  DO search for any BLOG related to this problem and vent there for any future buyer.
