Just bought new Envy M6-1184 and Pavilion G6-2288. Both have Windows 8 and AMD A10 processors.
Both of these (and one that was returned) show the same annoying symptom. It occured right out of the box after Windows 8 was set up.
Every few minutes the empty cd/dvd optical drive gets accessed, making that clicking noise as it tries to spin up.
On the Envy, I disabled the drive and this did not occur in the hour that I used the laptop. As soon as I enabled it again, the random accessing started again. It occurs approximately every 10 minutes or so.
Is there a program or app that is accessing the drive every so often? I have not installed any new apps or programs as yet.
Could it be a bad Windows 8 driver?
Please help. With this happening on 3 laptops, I can't be the only one noticing this.

Have you tried updating the BIOS on these notebooks? There may be a fix in a BIOS update to resolve this issue.
Thanks for the suggestion. I did look at doing that, but the description of the changes for the latest bios update says "adds suppost for additional notebook models". It didn't sound like there were major fixes in it. So I was thinking, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
Is there a real chance that there is a fix in there? If so, I will try it.

I have exactly the same problem with an Envy M6 1164-CA with AMD A8 processor.
I keep the optical drive disabled most of the time, enabling it when I need to use it.
Hopefully this issue will be fixed soon.

@M_Mariano,
Does the issue persist in Safe Mode with Networking? I know this is a limited Windows environment and I don't expect anyone to work primarily in this environment. Try to run in safe mode just long enough to verify if it happens or not in safe mode.
This will help narrow the root cause of the issue.
This document details how to enter safe mode in Windows 8.

Hello DjKosmit,
Your DVD drive will spin at random times.
Go to device manager, uninstall the DVD drive and restart the computer.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the optical drive.
Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
How long has this problem been happening?
What changed since it was working?
Please post your product and model number.
You can find this information by holding the FN key and pressing the ESC key.
Let me know how everything goes
Have a good day.
