Re: Help! DV2000 not starting up.

Mikeman,

Thanks for the reply. IT gives me hope that ther is still a possibility in fixing the laptop WITHOUT HP help.

Your response is much quicker than the response I got from HP. And your response recommends a solution not unlike the customer service support I talked to who just slams the door on me saying that it is out of warranty and they cannot help or they they are not aware on how to help.

I sent them an email to report the issue but did not recieve a response. Been trying to call them but in Oz, there is no help desk during Sundays. US does, tried callign them and they are asking me to send the laptop for discounted repair for $259.

In Oz, they do not even offer for a discounted repair. I tried requesting to talk to thei manager, the person on the phone refuse. I ask if he has supervisor I can talk to, he refuse. I ask if he know wnuyone from the executive form the company, he resufe. I ask if heknew the president of thecompany and the contact detials, he refus. Or maybe HE really doesn't know.

If you were able to fix it. Can you tell me how to fix it?

I know a bit about computers and since I almost loose hope that HP will help me fix the issue.

I built my first desktop way back 8 years ago :-)

I havent dis assemble a laptop yet but I cna try as this HP laptop has no use any way.

Only thing I can probably take/re-use was the hard disk and memory. I still need to extract my data out of the hard disk. (Really stressfull...)

But since you mention you were able to fix it by replace the mother board, can you tell me what specific motherboard I need to use/buy to replace the DEFECTIVE parts HP used and some tips or things I need to watch out for?

I can also try the workaround about re-soldering the video card chip on the motherboard if you can direct me information on how to do it or who ever did it successfully. Nothing to loose to resolder or repalce the mother board as the laptop is considered an expensive paper weigh.

Your response gives me hope that I can still fix this by resoldering the chip back or replacing the motherboard for a cheaper price.

I felt really bad that I bought 1,000+ USD for the laptop and it only last for 2 yrs and worst is due to a bad design/defective parts used by HP and HP doesn't help fixing it.

Re: Help! DV2000 not starting up.

Well,

I went to the HP support website, there is a place on there to lookup and order replacement parts.

Use the parts look-up tool on their site, input your product number of your laptop, from the sticker on the bottom of it, and it will give you all of the part numbers for any part in your laptop. Look-up the one for the motherboard, then you can use the part number to search ebay for a replacement. I got mine from Cheaplaptopz on ebay, I ordered it on a saturday, and the following monday I had it installed and working, now that is service! I've also bought from Laptopaid on ebay, and they are also good, I picked up a dell motherboard from them.

Anyway, I went above and way beyond just replacing the motherbaord. I replaced the heatsink with an updated version, and I also cut a 1-3/4 inch hole out of the case bottom where the fan is so that the fan could actually get enough cool air in to do something productive. Before it had a mere 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch square hole. (no, I'm not kidding! how was it supposed to get enough air?)  the original heatsink in the 2200 and probably the 2300 as well was an extremely poor design, it has a copper heatpipe, and the heatpipe only touches the CPU, it's stops at the CPU and does not cool the graphics chip. so that means the fan is not cooling the graphics chip, it's just aln all around poor design, and was doomed to failure from the start...

I really believe HP should have to fix every one of these that they sold, but I for one do not have the time to hold them accountable for it, I wish I did.

here's a link to the dissassembly instructions, although you can get those on HP site as well, I like this one because it has pictures and labels the screws for super easy re-assembly! Just label a sheet of paper with letters a-e for the different screws, you'l' see... Link

and here's a link to a you tube video of how to do the heat gun reflow of the Graphics chip. it doesn't show the board working afterwards, but it will if you do it right, this is the same thing tons of people do for the X-box 360 with the red ring, and it does work! I saved my old board, and plan to try to resurrect it this way, I just don't have time to tear down my laptop just to see if it works. Link

Also, you can read my posts and replies on another message here on this forum about how I repaired min, my posts start on page 65, I put in great detail what I tried and what the results were, also how I got the parts and so on... just in the interest of not re-posting the same data... here's the link to that. Link

There are ways to contact people but we can't post them on here because that's an invitation to get your posts deleted, or get banned, so I could PM the link to you if you want. You're also not supposed to talk about legal actions against HP either, as I found out already... for the record, no-one is suing HP, but there is a group suing Nvidia over this.

If I can be of any further help, just ask away!

-Mike-

Re: Help! DV2000 not starting up. -

[ Edited ]

Mine is broken again, after a main board replacement that had happened 6 Months after the purchase (within warranty). Won't comment on the way HP Germany handled the service repair...

Of course the 2 year warranty is over... I would assume it's the mainboard which I suppose was faulty when replaced so that it broke again... no LCD powering up, nothing... all black...

Pure frustration due to this service nightmare. Never seen a company handling support for such a "brand" product in such a lousy manner. Unbelievable!

S/N is <text removed for privacy>

P/N is RE275EA#ABD

Support chat not recognizing the product number, all crap...

HP what do you suppose in order to get it right this time?
