I would like to upgrade the hard drive on my HP8540p. The machine shipped with a 250 GB drive, P/N 595753-001. I can remove the existing hard drive and see easily that it is a Western Digital WD2500BEKT. According to the maintenance and service guide, the machine will support a 500 GB drive, P/N 595755-001. But that part number has been superceded by P/N 634919-001. How can I find the original manufacturer of P/N 634919-001? I cannot find in any HP document or on the web who the original manufacturer of the 634919-001 is. My best guess is that it is a WD5000BPKT. Is WD5000BPKT supported on the HP8540p? Is WD7500BPKT supported on the HP8540p? Or has HP switched to another manufacturer? If so, what is the OEM P/N?

You can buy a WD scorpio black Sata 2.5" laptop drive from any one you wish, the 500 or the 750gb will work in that model.

Thank you Mumbodog. Do you know if Hitachi (HTS727575A9E364) and Seagate (ST9750420AS) will work? What other drives will work?

3 requirements
1. 2.5 inch x 9.5mm thick (this is the standard for laptop hard drives 750gb or less)
2. Sata interface
3. Less than 1tb in capacity (1tb drives are thicker than the standard 9.5mm and will not fit in most notebooks.)
Note, thinner than 9.5mm is ok.
I prefer the WD Scorpio Black Series, they have a great warranty and great performance, its all I use when given the choice.

I bought WD75000BPKT on Newegg for an incredible $110. The higher sustained transfer rate is what convinced me to buy the 750 GB instead of the even much cheaper 500 GB drive. Thanks again for your assistance. I learned a lot about laptop hard drives during this exercise including Advanced Format, data transfer rates, and the usefulness of this forum to dig under the HP covers.
