I need to install new drive in dv6700 without loosing my software

I have restore disk but much of my software is purchased online .
I need to save my existing data but my laptop has only one harddrive bay .
How can I save my software when I install new drive?

Most paid programs cannot be saved by the copy/paste technique. Need to download the program and re-register it. You can also clone the data from the old to the new HDD. Downside is you will import all the bad stuffs from the old drive to the new drive.

I tried cloning drive using usb I get winstart error.
it never even tries to boot before it bombs out.
I only have 1 harddrive bay so can use software that came with drive.
How can I save my data the drive is still functional just too small.
