That is a fantastic heat range. even the 55C is an 'expected' heat range for your nvidia chipset. Im surprised that your system was crashing. Ive seen these boxes it 90C+

It could have been the 4 G of ram, or the 500g 7200 RPM HD. All I know is that my dual boot (xp/windows 7) machine has stopped crashing. It seems that there is an unexpected side effect. I positioned the aux fans (bodged from a targa laptop cooler) between my legs, I get a nice breeze, and since the laptop no longer rests on the tray my legs are keeping cool (I use my laptop all day long IN MY LAP!).
I can't wait to get the 2nd drive, and the internal bluetooth card.
Since the experiment appears to be a success it seems to be the time to commit to a project in wood, rather than cardboard.

BIOS update may help overheating issue, but not a permanent solution.
HP has release a bios update to initiate fan sooner than it should, thats why your temps is decreasing.
Using it always with cooling pad would be the best practice for dv9000.
As long as you keep the temperature low, below 70C for GPU, you can use it without problems.
Nvidia has serious issue with solder material for their GPU. The weak solder material + slim design of pavilion notebooks = Broken notebook with GPU failure.

It's still crashing about once a day. Is it possible that the overheating messed up the contacts so they have compromised integrity? I bought the extended warranty with loaner from Fry's. Maybe I should have them fix it again (They gave me a new mobo, HD, and keyboard last time.
But NOW I'm aware of the cooling issue, so when I get it back I'll be prepared.

If you have extended warranty, call them again.
Surprise to see your many components of your notebook have been replaced.
If the same problem occurs for the third times, you may them for any possibility for complete new system instead of band-aid solution.
