Keyboard Loose - New DV7 Laptop

Just recieved my new HP PAVILION DV7T-3100. Beautiful machine, but the keyboard appears to be lose on the left side. Keys on left side cause keyboard to flex just on the left side. Should I ship this to a HP repair center or attempt to fix this myself? I'm pretty handy. Can I get a service manual to see how to access keyboard without voiding warranty?

You should not need to work on a new laptop and if you remove any chassis screws other than to the memory or hard drive compartments you run the risk of losing the warranty. I have a dv7-1000 series laptop and the keyboard is a bit too flexible for my taste but I think that is normal.

Hi, I have the same problem.  All the keys on the left side of the keyboard of my new DV7 make a racket when I depress any of them left of about the G key and the whole keyboard at that side depresses - you can actually see the function keys moving too.  Is the solution then to send the laptop back to HP?  How long does that take until it comes back and did it solve the problem in your case or did they come back still making a noise?  It's a very annoying noise.

Same problem here too.  Can either of you confirm they actually fixed it?  I'm in the middle of my Summer Semester, I can't afford to be without my computer but DAM this is annoying!!!!  Especially since I'm OCD about computer stuff.

Just got my new DV7 and all the keys on the left side are loose and noisey too. What is the problem? Should I send it back for repair? I called them they sent me a box and said they will replace the whole keyboard, but if everyone is having the same issues I really don't want to be without it. Anyone fix there problems yet???

I think I'm going to send it in for repair, this is a new computer. It should not sound like this for the price I payed for it. I will post results when the machine come back from repair. I sure hope this fixes the problem. Very annoying to type with the keys on the left side. UGHHHH.

I too have a similar problem, although my laptop is a DV6.  I downloaded the Maintenance & Servide Guide from the HP support webpages (pdf approx 5.8 mb) and undertook the repair/solution myself.  I am a qualified Engineer, but the job is fairly straight forward. 

Follow the service guide to remove your keyboard from the chassis.  Then in the approx. area where the keyboard is flexing apply several layers of electricians tape to act as a packer.  Do NOT cover any holes or apply tape to any components or cables.  Apply the tape to the metal backplate only.  I applied 5 layers beneath the worse area of flexing and 4 layers adjacent to this. My keyboard is now no longer flexing.

My keyboard is only secured by a single screw, beneath the right-hand side.  This fact combined with a variation in' securing clip to backplate distance' leads to the flexing we are all experiencing. I suppose this only represents a minor design flaw, but hopefully HP can address it in later models.
