Keyboard key issues

I have a (DV6206us) laptop and recently started having some keyboard key issues. Keys such as G, H, Backspace, Scroll and others don't type/work when pressed. The keyboard itself has had a clear latex cover that I installed over the keys since I purchased it to protect it from spills, dust etc... After taking a closer look at it I noticed that if I press down on a certain area/s surrounding the keyboard keys the keys will work. But once I release pressure from the particular area the keys stop working.

Is this an easy fix? Something I can do myself? If not, what would be the approximate cost for repair/replacement of the keyboard?

I suspect my son (15mos) is at fault. I have on a few occasions caught him using my laptop backpack as a step while the laptop was in the bag. The backpack has padding on all sides. But I feel that the pressure of him standing/using it as a step has caused the keyboard key issues.

Re: Keyboard key issues

The replacement keyboard is generally around $60-80 USD. Keyboards are not, generally speaking, repairable.

Replacing it yourself depends on your comfort level with dissembling your laptop. For the newer laptops it is not that difficult.

If your comfort level is low on doing it yourself then take it to an HP certified shop or if the warranty is out, to a small shop that will replace it. Stay away from the Geek Squad. (little shop of horrors.)

[ Edited ]
Control Panel -->Regional and Language Options -->Keyboard and Languages tab-->click on change keyboards-->select English(United States) if other languages are in Installed services remove them and then click on apply. This will load the Keymapping that works well with a qwerty keyboard. The English(United States)International is also a good choice for those of us who are multilingual and works well with a qwerty keyboard,

Re: Keyboard key issues

The problem was solved with just opening the laptop up and fixing the loose keyboard connector cable I found.

Re: Keyboard key issues

My husband and I are having the SAME problem! Our g, h, backspace, scroll lock, and apostraphe keys are not working. (To create this message, I am copying and pasting the letters and it is VERY frustrating, as you know.) We are attempting your fix, but are not sure where to locate the keyboard connector cables. Can you provide any details about where and how you located yours? We opened the compartments one at a time, trying to avoid taking the whole thing apart, but did not immediately see the connector.

Re: Keyboard key issues

Hi!

You might want to browse the service manual of your laptop to locate that keyboard cable. Here's the address and locate your laptop model to access the manual:

Hope this helps.
