Buy a new PC, and obviously NOT an HP.
I have the exact same PC (Pavillion dv9310) and the exact same problem. There was a recall/extended warranty opportunity a few months after the release, but the window wasnt open for long. Unfortunately I'm only learning of this years later. The fan overheats, and has fried just about everything under my keyboard to the point where my PC wont even start up properly. The cost to get the fan, motherboard, a/o anything else..... is worth a new PC.

I have DV7 Entertainment PC that Is just over 1 year old. It has the same problems of overheating and now shuts down constantly. This is the 2ND HP laptop that has had the exact same problems.
FYI...it overheats even when I am doing nothing on the machine and nothing is running. And I can assure you there are no virueses on here either.
There are also battery issues where the battery worked fine for the first few months, but then started lasting only 30 minutes or less...and this battery is not on the recall list.
Not much can be done except NEVER buying and HP laptop again. They clearly have design issues with their laptops and cooling.
I got fooled twice, but now will never by HP laptop again for myself or anyone in my company.

Hello,
I have the same problem with Pavilion dv7-3165ef, and it all started after 1 year too... the end of the warranty.
I can't do anything with it anymore.
Webcam, wifi, photoshop, watching a movie, everything just sets it on fire!
I heard HP had many hardware issues http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Pavilion_(computer
Any update with the problem?
Thanks!

@billyhp100
Have you ever cleaned the vents with can of compressed air? About every 3-6 months I clean all of the openings/ports/vents with air to ensure good airflow for cooling. I also use a notebook cooling pad with fan under mine, especially if I am using it on a soft surface such as sofa which will block the bottom fan vent.My notebook is 3 yrs old and no problems so far.
Do you have the latest BIOS update for your model>> HERE
Daniel has a nice guide on dealing with heat issues HERE

yes i have every latest drivers and bios and every thing... except for Nvidia.
I reinstalled windows a few times and if i update Nvidia to the latest drivers it's even worse, can't even surf the net for 15 mins.
Cleaning the air vent!?
How come they made it impossible to open the bloody thing and clean it properly?
But anyway, it's not a ventilation problem.
HP and Nvidia robbed me, that's all i know... I was sold a self destructing piece of rubbish.
thanks for the links, though...

I had a dv7 that burned up, just after the warranty ran out. I hadn't recognized that my problems with performance were related to overheating.
I now have a dv8 that I custom-ordered to be the most powerful possible design. Same problem with overheating, but I complained before warranty ran out. They said they re-built the entire computer --BUT I had to pay for it because they said the problem was caused by a liquid spill, which was NOT true.
So, the "re-built" computer continued to overheat. I called again and they sent me a box. However, I didn't send it back in within my 12 months so I am out of luck!
HP builds junk! And they have no customer service. I would never buy another piece of junk HP again.
So, your overheating problem is yours. HP doesn't care what happens to you.
