Well, just to update everyone, I got mine repaired by HP at a cost $ 423, which was paid by my VISA card under their extended guarantee program.
However, HP customer service is horrible. One hand does not know what the other is doing and there is no records of whatever the representative is telling you.
In my case, I ordered the repair on the condition HP should call me before taking up the repairs and should tell me what was the cost of repair to which the representative agreed. None of that happened and I got the laptop back after 3 days with motherboard and cooling unit replaced.
When I called to get a reciept for my payment so that I can submit it to the credit card company, HP refused saying they do not issue receipt for repairs. They will not tell me even what was the defect. Luckily VISA did not fuss much on this issue and paid me the repair charges.
BEWARE, read above if you are sending it to HP for repair.

Hi All,
Same issue here. I am located in Greece - the local HP rep offered to fix it for 625 euro, which I declined, and bought another one for 700 instead...
My laptop's details:
Model: HP Pavilion ZD8388EA
SN: <text removed for privacy>
p/n: EL033EA#B1A
During the first year, under warranty, it broke down twice and fixed - once the screen broke down once the power circuit. These were fixed with no charge.
About the 600+ euro issue: I contacted HP, wanted to get an explanation for why it is normal to ask 600+ euro for a repair in the 13th month for a computer that I bought originally for 2000 euro. I could never get through to a manager, just some totally nonsense customer care rep called me to tell that my computer is not under warranty. They never answered my questions, never escalated my issue to any higher level.
One thing is sure: I already purchased another brand laptop, and I advise all my customers (being an IT professional dealing with /advising countless customers every day) against buying anything from HP. I feel, this is all we (customers, with no customer support) can do to let HP know what they are doing is NOT at all right.
The only way I am going to change my behaviour is if HP does something about my case. As a minimum some knowledgeable person should call me, not somebody who can just repeat his/her statement over and over again.
I hope someone from HP will read this and will bring back my faith in the company...

This issue has is common with many different models with the AMD/NVidia combination. The problem is heat and mpre precisely a lack of heat transfer away from the Nvidia video chipset tp the heat sink. There is a fix and it requires disassembly and replacing the pathetic spong they use as a means of transferring heat away from the chipset to the heat sink. This fix involves replacing the spong with a piece of coper(enen a copper penny will work) and thermal paste. The solder that connects the NVidia chipset to the Motherboard fails (i.e. melts causing loss of chipset pins to the board). Before I knew exactlyis often followed by video kicking out) and I called arguing that although this was not one of the laptops sited under the enhanced warantee program it did have the same chipset and archetecture but was ony a different form factor (i.e. moore compact) which would leave it even more susceptable to heat failure. After many escalations it went to a case manager and they repaired it for free. This repair was a new motherboard but unfortunately of the same crappy design. So after further research and knowing it was just a matter of time before it failed again I fixed it properly. Get someone who is capable to exact a permenant fix.Even after failure it can be fixed without replacing the motherboad and fixed in a way that will prevent it from failing again.Search on youtube and will will find a walk through for a repair that will fix this problem. It does require disassembly so you may want to find someone who is confident taking apart a laptop and reassembling it. what the problem was I was relatively sure that the issue was due to heat but wasn't sure where the failure was occuring. I had sent several friend's DV series laptops back to HP for repair after the warrantee period had expired. I had my personnel laptop fail which was a TX1304ca tablet model (wireless card disappeared which

Okay! After thinking I had the same problem as everyone else, I got mine fixed!
I would turn my laptop on, and after about 15 seconds, it would turn itself off and then back on again. It would do this continually. I could get to safe mode, but nothing seemed to help. Then I read in a forum about the bios clock. and that was it! My battery died about 2 years ago, So my bios clock was always set to the original date.but since I always plugged it in to use, I thought, no problem. Well, that just screws up the bios settings to the point it can't start. So I went into the bios and reset the clock and it now works!
I'm getting a new battery tomorrow!

I have a F756nr CNF-8031ry4. It has the same problem one week out of warranty and it won't restart. I goes into a loop trying to start. if i take out batteries and wait it will restart. If i got into bios there is only main tab with processor type. I've tried updating bios and that was good for a day or two then back to same problem. I've replaced the battery but it seem the computer will not remember the bios setting. I've found hundreds of people with same problem on line. I'm told to replace the motherboard at big expense, But my question is why will it work after removing batteries then revert back after a day? It definitely a Bios problem but why? And Why isn't Hp stepping up, this will be my last Hp after spending 1400.

I am so irritated....**agh**
I own a HP Pavillion dv6815nr...bought it a over a year ago so it is out of warranty. About 2 months ago it started shutting off without me shutting it off
I would restart and it would reboot, and then shut off. Thought it was an easy fix. Took it to Best Buy, and after they charged me 70 bucks for a diagnostic check, I was told it did not stay on long enough to even run the test and so went my 70 bucks. Now if I leave my laptop off for a few days I might be able to get an hour or so of use out of it, but I am so frustrated with this thing cutting off mid anything, I just stick with using it every couple of days and try not to curse HP. I read through all these posts about this similar problem and felt compelled to call HP tech support. First, my laptop is not on the designated "problem list" for the Service Enhancement Warranty, even if is has the same problem the rest of that list has, but the kicker was how he explained to me that I will be billed for the call. Hm. I'm being billed for advice to an obvious widespread HP problem? Are you kidding me?
I hung up on him, because if he said my first name one more time, like he was pitching Oxyclean, I was going to throw the laptop out the window and lose my mind.
I need a freakin new laptop and I guess I am going to have to camp outside of Best Buy on Friday and hopefully I will not get trampled by the crazy shoppers. Hm, HP you are really sucking right about now.

I have just discovered the same problem with my son's laptop.
DV6810US, 18 month's old.
It recently was freezing with some weird fuzzy lines on screen. Then if froze for the final time yesterday when I was on the internet with it.
Now it tries to turn on for 4 seconds, then off, then on again.
Was told not on list of problemed computers.
I am looking to buy my daughter a computer, what brand should I shop for then? Not going HP again.

Hi GoodNeighbor! I've fixed two of these laptops that exhibited the same problems. I would push the power button and it would turn on then off then on again. After searching and searching for this problem, I got a few ideas and then made the decision to try and repair it myself. So far, it's been two months and no problems. The only thing is that you have to open up the laptop. Here is where I talk about it. Maybe it will help someone else?

Good news or bad, I have your problem and solution, also have the dv6119us and bought it from circuit city with the exact same problem as well as the wireless network card is unreadable in the motherboard, the problem is the GPU chipset on the motherboard, it overheats and causes a (cold saulder joint ) which prevents the laptop from booting. However the fix takes some nerve and patience....................I actually found the fix on you tube, were a man is explaining the fix in his kitchen, and mind you I did not think this would work, I was about to go buy a mac for christmas but passed to the price and this was a last ditch effort. the chip only needs to be reheated with a spot light bulb and pressed firmly back into the mother board, i will try to find the link again and post it on here, i did not follow his instructions exactly, i just put the bulb relatively close and got it hot to the touch.............Ya i know this sounds crazy, but i am typing this on that exact laptop, however i did a completer system restore after it rebooted with the orginal backup disks to get the wireless working again, the problem is with hardware software conflicts......... it will work and you will be amazed. also a man pressed down firmly on the jkl buttons or in that area and his turned back on, you have to hold them down while pressing the power button, they are directly above that chip on the mother board however i don't know if that is a perm fix, let me know it worked for ya.......
