Laptop turns on off on off on off--wont stop!!

Wouldn't you know it.  Warranty expired July 13th.  There has been a lot of very helpful suggestions so far and I'm trying each one in hopes that one of them will be the answer to my dilemma.  Thanks to everyone.  Will update as I try each suggestion.

Press the windows key+b while power it on. It will give you the error code. At least mine gives it, one long beep followed by two short beeps.

Didn't get an error code just the same taunting black screen.  It did however keep it from turning on/off/on/off.  Trying removing the motherboard battery and following that suggestion.  Hopefully....

akkhandelwal, you are a Genius!!! I removed the battery from the motherboard and let it sit for about 30 minutes, put the battery back i, turned it on and Presto!  So far it has been working for 4 minutes!  I'm thinking I may not try anything at this time to fix the Bios corruption.  I'll just see if and how long it will work with just removing and replacing the battery when needed.  Thanks again for your input and the Solution!

I am glad it worked for you. Make sure you create the backup disks asap. In my case the windows  files got messed up and the recovery partition would not work,  so I had to order the recovery disks from HP. Even that would not restore my laptop, so I have loaded Win XP for the time being and using it the way I described earlier, till someone can tell us the mystry behind this on-off lights.

My laptop is in vegetable state right now. The only way I can switch it on is by leaving it without any power for about 30 minutes.

The restore CD I ordered from HP will not work. The Bios update will not work. I am only able to load windows XP from CD, which works, but I am without any drivers and then the laptop freezes sometimes in minutes, and then I ahve a start the 30 minute cycle to bring it back to life.

Any clue as what could be wrong will be greatly appreciated.

Excellent suggestions.  My laptop is now up and running.  I am not sure how long will it run.  I tried shutting down three times and started fine so far.  However, on keeping idle for some time, it goes back to boot cycles. When it started first, I did a restore to 2006 factory setting date.  I am not sure if that helped.  I tried to write restore on DVD for backup, but it did not continue after 2 disc.  It looks as though the laptop may function at least sporadically. It is good to see that at least someone working at HP is positively looking at the problem to understand it, rather than shovelling under the rug.
