UnhappyDave - It might be worth checking that your hard drive is seated correctly. I've had to introduce a buffer between the hard drive and the rest of the PC so the connections are maintained. Messy (the HD cover now bulges) but it's the only way I could get it to work.

I have been a victim of this useless hp pavillion 2500 series. I have tried it all
Cooling pads, device drivers, killing all the applications that making the system heat., stopped playing the games..
But have anybody on here tried installing Win 7?
let us know if it could possibly solve the heating issues as vista has been known as crappy OS after all.
Thanks

Windows 7 does help - I also put an ssd in which make the whole thing work like a dream. I have the required driver info for Win7 if you need it.

I bought my dv2500 in June of 2008, October of 2009 the hinges broke. Around the same time the computer kept shutting itself off and with Vista installed, it would take for ever to load back up, and then it would shut off again now it gets so hot that I cant use it as a laptop, and its too big to uae it as a paper weight. When I contacted HP they wanted $400 to fix it. My husbands refurbished Thinkpad has lasted longer and cost less than $300. Nonetheless, every now and then I check back to see if there is anything I can do to get it working again. I will install W7 and see if that helps. Any drivers available would be greatly appreciated. Windows 7 installed fine then I installed the nvidia driver.. 195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_
followed by the HP drivers sp35930, sp36881, sp37614, sp37794, sp38361, sp40270 and it worked just fine. I did have the fix applied as I had an extended warranty but with Windows 7 the temperature was better and it was so much better. The SSD drive is a great upgrade but they seem to have climbed in price recently so might be worth waiting for - if you do get one, turn off the sleep mechanism, SSD drives can lose their firmware (as mine did) and you have no option other than sending it back. If you need any help - let me know..

I know this is an older post but wanted to put in my two cents as it still seems to be a problem.
I have a dv2700t with six screens on start up. I've read numerous feeds from people with the same problem and decided to try to speak with HP. This is my story so far.
I was on the phone with HP for about a half hour...just hung up and was told a supervisor was going to call me back. I was offered the $399 plus tax fix with the stipulation that the parts going back into my laptop were going to be upgraded to the newest technology. I would have agreed with this if I had not read all the posts regarding the defect with the nvidia card, placement or installation on HPs part. I suggested to the tech that he offer me a discount on the repairs considering the KNOWN problems. I have yet to speak with the "supervisor".
I don't know if it's just me or not but I don't feel the standard repair rates should apply to consumers who have had the bad luck to purchase a computer with this defect. I felt sure HP would stand behind their product and try to keep a customer rather than make a buck.
I'm hopeful...

Yep. I have, not one or two but three lap tops from, Yeah you guessed it, your favorite PC Manufacturer, HP.
display problems on my 2 year old dv2500 and scratches on the monitor on two newer HDX lap tops, and they are doing nothing about it after 2 years of people complaining on this and other forums.
No worries everyone! ! ! !. I have found the solution to my problems and yours as well.
DO NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCTS ANYMORE.
THEY HAVE LOTS OF DESIGN FLAWS AND THEIR ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT IS STILL GETTING PAID TO BUILD JUNK ! ! !
AS LONG AS YOU KEEP BUYING, THEY'LL KEEP BUILDING JUNK ! ! ! ! !
WHY???? BECAUSE THEY FIGURE WE ARE TOO DUMB TO FIGURE IT OUT ! ! ! ! ! AND IF WE KEEP BUYING,,, MAYBE WE ARE.! ! ! !
SO,, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO?????
With all due respect,,,,,XDELL.
Soon to change my log in name to,,,,,, 4DELL.
Because software issues are better than HP JUNK ! ! !
