My hp pavilion dv6 3010us has stopped charging and will not acknowledge that is is plugged in

[ Edited ]

I was just using my laptop as usual, plugged in and charging, when it spontaenously began running on battery power. I made sure that all the connections in the cord (plug to outlet, cord to box, plug to cord, and plug to notebook) were fine, tested it on a different outlet, and checked the cord for any obvious internal breaks or weak spots - every seemed five by five. The battery drained at a ridiculous rate (one percent per minute on power saver mode with a dimmed screen and no USB plug-ins) once on battery. No amount of fiddling with it will get the battery to consider itself plugged in, though I know that power is at least getting to the adapter box. as it has an indicator light. I can not run a battery check because it does not recognize being plugged into the AC adapter. The problem seems to be either with the battery or the adapter - the absurd rate with which the notebook is using power would seem indicate the battery, but the fact that the computer won't "plug in" suggests it is the adapter - but for all I know it's somewhere inside the laptop between the two. I'd prefer not to spend the money on both, espcially if the problem is neither. Any suggestions?

Additional Info:

  • Running Windows 7 64 bit
  • Replaced the ac adapter cord about a year ago
  • Computer purchased in July 2010

Hi

As i see your issue the issue seems to be with the AC Adapter just replace the part which is from the Brick to your Notebook pin unit should be back to its working condition. Then maybe you can test your Battery with the links given below all weblinks are given below for you.

How to Improve the Performance of the Battery

Calibrating the Notebook Battery

Checking the Status of the Battery

Testing and Using the AC Power Adapter

A friend of mine (who used to do student tech support at U of M) suggested the same thing. I bought a replacement adapter off of Amazon. I should know by Saturday whether or not this is the fix.
