New hp dv7 notebook--- spacebar key will only work if i tap it in the center.

I found a review of the dv7t on the HP Home and Home Office web site, HP Pavilion dv7t customizable Notebook PC customer reviews - product reviews -... that indicates that my problem is a poor spacebar design. The reviewer, JamesJ, states, “Excellent performance, excellent monitor, excellent sound. A really study laptop. A couple issues: The spacebar is faulty. I had to put a piece of cardboard under it to make it function.” I also found a HP forum post where the author solved the problem with paper folded to a desired thickness. I find that if I hit the spacebar anywhere between the intersection of the C and V keys and the intersections of the N and M keys, the response is good. If I hit the spacebar outside of this range, I most often get no response. I have no problem with other keys. IMPORTANT UPDATE: My problem was SOLVED by installing a .25 inch X 1.25 inch piece of 3M Molding Tape to the bottom of the spacebar key cap, in centered location. This Tape is designed for attaching molding to an automobile. It has adhesive on both sides and has a thin plastic cover over the exposed adhesive side which must remain in place. The thickness of the tape with cover is about .06 inch thick. Since installing the tape, Pushing the spacebar with my right thumb at its nomal touch typing position has produced a space every time. The spacebar can now be pushed at any position and it will produce a space. I was shocked to find that the keycap is thin and somewhat flexible. It is now Bulged up slightly, in the center, but that does not bother me at all, I have pictures of the fix and will send them to anyonte that sends me an E-Mail request. Relative to Pierce54's 01-15-2012 07:25 AM post, reinstalling drivers did not work for my dv7t-4100 CTO notebook.

I am 100% satisfied that It's completely fixed. Since I got it back I have never had a time where hitting the space bar was not recognized.

there are more than one MODEL of DV7 and each one has different settings,drives. etc etc etc..but as far as the space bar goes...believe it or not... uninstall the synaptics mouse pad and keyboard drivers.. BUT FIRST PLUG IN A USB KEY/MOUSE.. REBOOT AND REINSTALL THE DRIVERS .. WILL CLEAR UP THE SPACEBAR ISSUE..

Hi,

I did try to uninstall the keboard and mouse driver. I rebooted the machine and window reinstalled the drivers automatically. However, I still can't get the space bar to respond properly. Any comments?

The labtop model is dv7-6b32us.

See my 01-15-2012 01:06 AM Post relative to adding a spacer under the spacebar Key Cap.  This very easy fix is still working, 100% of the times that I hit the spacebar with my right thumb, for me.  iwampfler

As I mentioned in my previous posts, HP replaced my keyboard under warenty for FREE, including shipping. It now works 100% of the time. The only issue is that HP, for some reason, insists on resetting the machine configuration to the "factory shipped" settings. The did backup and restore the user files but so did I just in case. This is strange as this is a hardware issue. Never the less, my machine works fine now. I did opt for the express shipping option, which did cost me $15 but it only took 4 days to get my machine back once I shipped it.

I have the same problem and I KNEW that reinstallation of the drivers would not work.  It's a MECHANICAL issue not SW related.  There are differering levels of friction feedback depending on where you press the spacebar.  I am waiting in a new a new keyboard from HP.......hopefully this "specific" board will work.  I have tried some Dv7's @ Office Max and the like and have not noticed the problem with the spacebar......smooth and consistant resistance along the entire bar. It's a QC issue apparantly.
