PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

I have a Compaq Presario F767CL with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit installed. Yesterday, I tried to install a new anti-virus program from a CD and I discovered that my drive will not work. I can hear it spin and the light blinks green but it will not show under "My Computer". When I went to the "Device Manager" the drive has an exclamation point next to it and says it cannot start. I also noticed 3 other devices with exclamation points (all named PCI device). I have went to the HP driver site and got all the drivers for my hardware and the PCI devices are still there. I have tried uninstalling and letting VIsta install them but it doesn't work. For the CD, I tried the trick with the Upper and Lower Filters but it is still not recognized. Please help.

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

Hi,

Go into Device Manager, right click on the problem/unknown PCI device and select Properties.  Click the Details tab, choose Hardware Ids from the dropdown box and post back with the details shown under Value.

Repeat this for each entry.

Regarding the CD/DVD drive, what is the actual error code?

Regards,

DP-K

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

DavidPK, I just checked "Device Manager" again this morning and the PCI devices are no longer listed. I did a scan for hardware changes and nothing popped up. The only thing I can remember about them were the VEN_1180 and one of the devices was DEV_0022. I know thats not the information you asked for but that's all I can remember. The error on the CD drive is: Device cannot start Code 10

Hi,

I would guess that the missing PCI devices were related to your Ricoh card reader and the drivers may just have been reinstalled by Windows.  If you do need the installer, it's on the link below.

Ricoh 5in1 Card Reader Driver.

Regarding the optical drive, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works correctly and no longer shows the Code 10 error in Device Manager.

Regards,

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

DavidPK, Thanks. I'll give the sfc command a try and get back to you. About the Ricoh drivers, I found it odd that HP didn't list them on the driver download page for the laptop. Thanks

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

I followed your instructions and when I went to uninstall the drive it was not listed under device manager. I hit scan for new devices but it found nothing. I restarted and rechecked device manager but still nothing.

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

Hi,

You're welcome :smileyhappy:

The Ricoh driver is on your Product Page but for some reason, they're listed under 'Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices' :smileylol:

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

Hi:

Shut down the PC, and physically remove the optical drive from your PC.

Boot it back up without the optical drive installed, and let it come into windows for a couple minutes.

Shut the PC back down, and hook the Optical drive back up.

Sometimes it will be re-discovered that way.

Paul

Re: PCI device and Cd -Rom not installing

Hi,

Ok, try the following.

Shut down the notebook, remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold the power button down for 10 seconds to dispel any residual current and then with reference to Page 48 of your Maintenance & Service Guide, remove the optical drive.

Reinsert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook without the optical drive - let Vista fully load and then after a couple of minutes, shut the notebook down again, remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Reinstall the optical drive, reinsert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook - after you log-in, does Windows report new Hardware has been detected and attempt to load a driver for it?

Regards,
