Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

Does anyone else have problems with the quick launch buttons on these models of laptop. Previously I bought the HDX 9120 model but within 2 weeks the quick launch buttons froze up and hp authorised a replacement as bios upgrade software updates etc did not solve the problem. It was replaced with the 9160 model which is exactley the same but 2 hard drives instead of one.

A year later I am still having the same issues where the quick launch buttons freeze up and no bios upgrade or software updates resolve the issue. HP sent me a new battery & power supply but that did not resolve the problem either. It has been into hp several times but each time they say no fault found. The only way I have found that works for me to get the quick launch buttons working is to remove the battery and power supply completly press the power button in for about 20 seconds then replace both battery and power supply. Sadly this method only lasts for a short period of time before they freeze up again.

According to a 2nd level support engineer within HP its a build up of static and to stop this from happening again it was suggested I allow the battery to run completly flat even when using the laptop so that it switches itself off. This is one massive inconvienience and sadly still does not stop the buttons from freezing up again. I have now taken my laptop back to comet where i purchased it and they in turn have managed to get HP to accept it back to be examined again in the hope they can actually find the cause. As yet HP say no fault found!! The laptop is now out of its 12mths warranty so i'm really hoping this matter can get sorted.

If anyone else has a problem with the quick launch buttons please let me know as I would be interested to read your stories. I have found other ppl on here with the same problem but not as many as I expected and it seems this issue is not related to a specific model either which is quite alarming.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

I believe you need to go into Quickplay and from there update the drivers. (look for update link in the program)

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

I think I already stated in my original post the laptop has had all updates, its also had software & hardware unistalled and reinstalled via the recovery manager to no avail. It's been to Hewlett Packard on several occasions but they can not find a fault which is very frustrating. Removing the battery & power supply resolves the problem but only temporarily. Within a few weeks the problems back again. Hewlett Packard have on several occasions updated the Bios etc but the problem still returns.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons (& HDX18)

I bought an HDX18 in January (2009).  After less than a week, the EJECT quick launch button kept operating by itself, ejecting the disk.  I couldn't watch anything or install any software.  This continued for about a week, then the eject quick launch button stopped working all together.  I was just releved to be able to use the laptop and install software on it, so I ignored it.

Then the volume - button operated continuously.  I couldn't turn sound on at all, and I couldn't get rid of the box in the middle of the screen.  Also the scroll regions of the touchpad stopped working.

Does this sound like yours?

Despite it being an obvious hardware problem, I had a dance of updating drivers, changing settings, uninstalling drivers, reformat and install everything again.  It's now in for repair and I hope it gets fixed.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

I have a HDX9095 I brought it in Nov 2007 and I brought a HP 3 year extended warranty.

The Quick launch buttons have not worked since I brought it, and like you the only way to get them to work is to switch off, remove the battery, press in the power button for about 30 seconds then reboot, only works for about a few hours.

I've looked into this on forums etc and it is very common, it looks like it's a design fault, HP will not sort your problem out because HP will have to redesign and re-manufacture the quicklaunch buttons.

I don't know if HP sorted the problem out with it's new HDX models, If your really not happy with the buttons not working keep on pushing HP you might eventually have the laptop replaced with the newer HDX model.

I'm not really bothered about mine, I could easily complain to HP, but I can't be bothered, plus all the controls can be found in windows anyway, but if HP or yourself do find a permanent answer to this i'd be very interested.

Cheers

Paul

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

nope fix in newer models.  my hdx18 had its mute button stay constant red since soon after i bought it last month.  no reinstalling helps.

the volume sliders are often screwing up too.  staying on, slow to react, etc.

no help from HP.

HDX18 quick launch buttons

Here's the update on mine  (reminder it started automatically ejecting the disk after less than a week, and in the end there was no sound, a volume window over the top of everything that wouldn't go away and the touchpad stopped working).

It took almost 2 months to get my brand-new top-of-the-range laptop backThey replaced the capacitive touch strip by the keyboard (and put a permanent black mark on the screen).  The mute button doesn't really work, but the others seem to work OK; it is definately better than before.

I'm not sending it back for another repair unless I really have to though; I can't afford to loose the time taken to do the repair, plus the time to re-install all the software and recover all my lost work.

If they are causing problems being on constantly (or you can't use WiFi or sound because of them), then I'd get them to fix itIf you have to then say you're going to send it back for a refund.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons (& HDX18)

The problem is the design, I put a piece of tooth pick right in between the keyboard itself and the frame beside the Mute button and it worked.

So just put something to put a space between the keyboard and the frame on top of it, or if you can have HP do it for you and tighten the screw if keyboard that they got too close to the frame.

Have a wonderful time,

King.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

Hi there! i can see that many people are concerned about these stupid quick launch buttons. I have second laptop from HP. My first one was DV9365ea,which did break down 4 times during the warranty period(3 of them due to these cute buttons failure).Spent a total of 50+ days in the repair shop and then eventually replaced by HP with DV7-1135ea. And after 7 months of faultless(ish) work, them buttons are not working again at all! I guess, that it is a permanent flaw with their laptops, and the best way to solve this ridiculous problem is to get rid of them completely. Since they are almost useless, and problem causing. Second thing is, I am not really willing to get HP to repair it,because it will definitely end with taking the machine away from me for undefined time. Legally it called: LOSS OF USE.  Nevermind people in the HP call centres, who barely speak proper english(all of this incures extended telephone bills)

So,any reasonable solution is really welcome.  Thanx.

Re: Pavilion HDX 9160 quick launch buttons

Unfortunately, like everyone has said its probably a design flaw.

My quick launch buttons work fine the only thing is that I they do not function properly when installing software or when the window for the software being installed is active. If i click outside the window they work perfectly.

by the way I have an hp hdx18 laptop.

I agree with the statement that they should remove the quick launch buttons completely, because I understand if you bought such an expensive piece of hardware you expect for everything to work properly like these convenient quick launch buttons if not on your first model, they SHOULD work on your replacement model. Not have they same problem persist.

I am pretty tech savey when it comes to pcs, if any one of you lived here in miami I could probably find a solution.
