Pavilion dv1040us power and/or backlight issue issue

I have a Pavilion dv1040us with power issues. The computer switches from battery to ac when it has battery installed. With no battery it runs on ac but screen backlight dims and brightens randomly as it does with battery installed. Battery charges to 98% when computer is off. When computer is on battery stays constant or might slowly dischrage. I removed the motherboards and re soldered the power jack and all is well there. I updated BIOS, gpu driver, chipset driver (gpu and chip latest from Intel)

I cannot determine if it is a physical issue or software. The backlight is unrelated to cpu speed. Moving the power cord connections has no effect. I am not sure if there is a light sensor that may be part of the issue. It runs on battery fine. Sometimes I think moving the laptop has effect but other times not. Right now the backlight is not flickering- battery is 98% as I left it off for a few hours. Battery below 50% causing probs? Will leave it on battery now and see if backight issue returns/worsens.

Any tips or info appreciated-

UPDATE: The backlight switching seems to have been the simple issue of different settings for battery and AC- and as it switches all the time the backlight would change. If I set backlight to same setting for battery and AC there is no switching and the display looks fine.

In the end it was a bad power supply. It does not have a light on it so was a little harder to trace. I opened the supply, cut the cord, and re soldered and it works fine now.
