Pavilion dv5 1111-ea laptop extremely hot

I've been monitoring my laptop with Speedfan, and temperatures have been going as high as 91C when a game is open. Idle, my laptop can be as low as 48C, but usually stays around 60C+ when I have a web browser or other simple program open. I've bought a cooling pad with a built in fan, which has done nothing. Right now, Speedfan is measuring the temperature at 76C, and I'm only using a maximum of 15% cpu.

But here's the thing; even when temperatures shoot to 90C, nothing seems to happen - the laptop doesn't freeze, no errors occur, etc etc. The thing I'm worried about is that constantly having above average temperatures will affect the life-span of my laptop, or that it will suddenly go up in smoke one day.

I've tried lightly hoovering out any dust caught in the vents, I've tried using the aforementioned cooling pad, but I don't understand WHY this is happening. Ideally I would just stop monitoring the temperature as nothing is going wrong, but I'm worried for the safety of the hardware in my laptop...

Is it just that my laptop has a higher average temperature than others? Searching around, it seems most people have temperatures from about 40-60C, 70C at a push. But mine is much higher! So sorry to keep rambling, but I'm seriously worried about this. Thanks for reading, and I hope you can reassure/help me.

Re: Pavilion dv5 1111-ea laptop extremely hot

Your model of  notebook uses an AMD processor and ATI graphics card. The processor is rated for temperatures of about 100C, perhaps a tad more. If your laptop senses that the internal temperatures are reaching dangerous/damaging levels, it is designed to automatically shut down to prevent damage. The laptop cooler you are trying may not be helping because the fan/fans on it either don't line up with the fan/fans on your notebook or they push/pull air in the opposite direction of the notebook. If either is the case, then the cooling pad won't really do you any good

Thanks for the response. If the laptop ever got to a dangerous temperature and had to shut down, would any permanent damage be caused? Obviously it's not the best idea for a laptop to force a shutdown due to heat, but I assume everything would be ok if that were to happen? (as you mentioned that it would do this to "prevent damage")

Also, the fans of the cooling pad do line up with some of the vents below the laptop, however I guess if the laptop is spewing hot air at a faster rate than the pad can send in cool air, then the laptop is going to win in terms of temperature. But will it do any harm to the laptop to have a cooling pad that doesn't really help constantly below it? If it doesn't do any harm, then I may as well keep it in use just in case it decreases the temperature by a degree or two.

Re: Pavilion dv5 1111-ea laptop shutting down

Guys, just reading your posts.  I've got a Pavilion dv5 1111-ea and noticed over the last year how hot it becomes.  It now shuts itself down regularly after about 2hrs or so, when I am only using Word, internet and Outllook, often while I am in the middle of something, due to overheating (It is 1 year and 1 month old, so its one year warranty just expired).  I suggest if yours is still within the warranty period that you kick up a fuss with HP and get a different laptop as a replacement.  I am furious about this.  I bought this HP for the charity I work for because I thought HPs were reliable.  I should have bought a bloody ACER! Anyway good luck.
