Pavilion dv5000 cto notebook pc- DvdDrive Won't read DVD'S

I own an HP Pavilion DV5000 cto notebook PC.  My DVD Drive (HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-4084N) stopped reading DVDs.  It will play audio cd's and it can read data cd's, but it will not even recognize a DVD.  I've searched the forums for solutions to this problem, and have updated all of my drivers, searched for new firmware (I've not found any better updates), restored my system using the system recovery discs, and tried deleting the upper and lower filters in my registry. Nothing seems to work.  My DVD drive still doesn't read DVDs, and now my itunes cannot burn or rip cd's because the upper and lower filters are deleted.  Does anyone know how I can repair my registry and somehow fix my DVD/CD Drive? I've tried everything I can think of.  Can anyone Please help me out with a solution???...(-and no, I did not back up my registry before I modified it.....idiot:smileysad:)

Have you tried reseating your DVD drive?  I had a similar problem and took out the drive and put it back and it read the discs again.  Good luck!

Re: Pavilion dv5000 cto notebook pc- DvdDrive Won't read DVD'S

Hi, i had the same problem

the problem may be caused by PIO access , try to change DMA mode , under Window XP, Right click on My PC, choose properties, Hardware, Device manager, locate IDE ATA .... , and go to the option SECONDARY IDE channel.

And change it to DMA. restart the system, and try again.

If PIO don´t change. Try using Softare like DVD region Free, init the system and play dvd player, when start the region Free, it ask about Use DMA mode, choose and restart the system.
