This suit does NOT include dv6700 series. Figured I'd at least add my name here to the many people who are experiencing this problem. Bought it almost two years ago and paid around $700. After having read all the posts I have decided NOT to try to repair the thing as I feel it is an obvious manufacturing defect and honestly, kind of like the iPhone problem, as consumers if we allow companies to take advantage of us by continuing to give our business despite this quality of product they will continue to treat us the same and produce it. This company is in business to make money and if we, as consumers, hit them in the wallet they will adapt or die, plain and simple. I have removed the HDD and put it into a WD Passport external drive case and can easily retrieve all my data. Incidentally, I ran a complete virus scan on the HDD immediately after connecting and the drive was perfectly clean so, it's deffinitely not a virus problem.

I have a HP DV6700 (dv6731tx) and was affected by this issue this morning for the first time, I have had the notebook since July 2008.
I used a strange method I read elsewhere to resurrect it for now, but I fear this will strike me again in the near future. I am appalled that the notebook, despite having the FAULTY PART in it, is not covered by the court case and hence will not be repaired without significant cost.
I thought I would leave a message here to join the many others, we may be fighting a losing battle but we should try nonetheless.

I spoke with HP support, their authorised repairers, and then with HP spare parts.
What HP says is that my mainboard needs replacing - whether or not this is a viable solution when the problem lies with the soldering joints is debatable, but let' s ignore that for now.
I got in touch with their authorised repairer to see if I could get a ball park figure for such a repair, all they could give me was that it would cost $Au150.15 plus cost of parts.
So I spoke with HP spare parts to get the cost of the part they wish to replace, the mainboard. The price for this is $Au709.24.
Total cost if you take it via HP - $Au859.39.
This is ridiculous, even if it wasn't a known issue, the fact that a mainboard repair would cost that much is an absolute crime.

Same issue. press power button, LED's light up, fan spins, hard drive reads a couple of times, just as the screen flickers slightly as if it's about to come on.... power goes out. Wait 7-8 seconds & cycle repeats on it's own. If, during a cycle, I hold down the power key I can get the laptop to shutoff and stop cycling. Sometimes, as it's cycling, it just hangs, LED's are on, nothing on the screen. No response to any button pushes except for holding down the power key. Then it will turn off. Doesn't matter if I have the battery in, AC attached, or not. Been doing this for 5 months but tonight it would just never come to life. Been trying since 6pm (now 10:30pm).

Wait a minute, if I hit power on & ESC key at same time I am able to get the HP screen up along with the F(X) key press instructions. I'll wait to see if the thing will actually go to windows.. 2 minutes.. oo, somethings happening, screen is blank, hard drive is thinking... whoa, windows knight rider eyes is scanning left to right... vista music is played..... hot dang, there we are. My wallpaper is up. Let's try the net. internet explorer quick launch... Home PAGE!!!!!!! Whoa, Youtube!!! Now I don't dare to see if this fix is repeatable until I absolutely have to.
There's no doubt something is very wrong during bootup. I almost believe it's a chip thing or perhaps a solder thing that pressing the ESC key solves momentarily. The HP runs hot all the time ever since day 1. My current choice is to never shut it off and, if I have to, hope the ESC key trick works again. Eventually that laptop is done and I too will not be buying an HP again. (As I write this post on my Gateway that has had no issues for 9 months).
When I called HP's service center I got a polite woman (heavy accent), would not acknowledge if this were a common issue, would not pass me on to a supervisor or technician, told me there are no recalls on my model, offered me a diagnostic only service for $50 (I pay shipping both ways). Once diagnosed I would have to pay all repair charges. 1 year warranty on repair. I was polite but persistent however that lead to a long silence of stalemate with her not allowing me on to anyone else. It appears HP does not want to address what appears to be a common problem within a certain product line. I see no HP response on their own forum. As a quality manager for the past 23 years this level of customer service would have gotten me fired by now. An opportunity has been missed. Too bad.. sounds like the culture of Carly Fiorina has remained.

It is amazing the amount of complains related to the same issue. This seems to be a defective MOBO. The most amazing part is that HP is doing NOTHING about it!
I had this laptop (dv6700) for over two years, and for no apparent reason started the power on and off sequence like many others reported. I took it apart and the the thermal grease on the processor was melted like I never seems before. Anyway, I baked the MOBO at 385 degrees for 7 minutes and the computer booted all the way. After the second power up it does not pass the HP boot page, it powers off. I going to bake again at the same temperature but for 10 minutes and see the results. I will post the results. Again, I believe this is a defective MOBO otherwise it will not be so many postings with the same exact problem in some many different sites.

I too have the laptop DV6700/dv6810, it just quit on me today, same symptoms, blinking blue lights, clicks, then off, then on, then off, while holding down the power button. I tried all the fixes listed. Can't believe its the mobo... If that's its, it was faulty from the beginning. I am sick of buying junk and overpaying.
I want my files off the thing. Can anyone give me suggestions, HELP
HP should have solved the problem of cooling laptops a long time ago.

To retrieve your files, pick up a USB HDD Enclosure Example to put it in. Plug into second PC and copy files off.
