Pavilion dv7-1464 keyboard

My new Pavilon Entertainment PC dv7-1464nr is a beautiful looking thing and I've had no problems with it since I purchased it four months ago.  However, you can't read the keyboard with any kind of overhead light on!  You have to tilt and lean the laptop at a certain angle to elimnate the glare off the beautiful,  shiny, gold-colored keys to be able to read the number or letter.  It's a good thing I know where most of the letters are but it's still a real problem. There is not enough contrast between the shiny gold keys and the white letters/numbers.  I didn't notice it until the first time I used it with an overhead light or in bright daylight.  HP needs to upgrade this thing with a new keyboard with more contrast.  AND, for what I paid for this thing, the keyboard should light up!  My cheap LG cell phone has keys that light up. What do you say HP?

Re: Pavilion dv7-1464 keyboard

I have the same problem too. The worse thing is that the white letters have darkened and a damp cloth doesn't bring the whote back.  I'm afraid to use a strong solution for fear that the letters itself might disappear...Any solutions from HP so far?

Re: Pavilion dv7-1464 keyboard

I did get a response from HP that I wasn't thrilled with.  Here it is:

Dear William,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I apologize for your inconvenience as a result of this situation.

From your E-mail, I understand that you are unable to read the keys on your HP notebook under the high contrast light.

William, I have gone through the database and I would like to inform that there is no such replacement keyboard for your notebook model. However, in order to resolve the issue you can purchase the keyboard stickers and stick them on the keyboard keys.

You can purchase the keyboard stickers from any computer stores in your region. For your convenience, I am providing the third party website for your reference

http://www.latkey.com/

Hi contrast light?  Hell, a 20 watt light bulb overhead washes out the keys! LOL I haven't gotten the stickers yet but I guess that's the answer.  For what I paid for this thing they should replace the keys.  I wonder how long the stickers will last.

If you are still under factory warrenty contact HP TOTAL CARE and inform them that you wish to have the notebook serviced to have the keyboard replaced with a different finish because you are having difficulty reading the keys with the current supplied keyboard and see what happens

Re: Pavilion dv7-1464 keyboard

I've spoken to Customer Care and they skirt around the issue. One told me to reinstall all the keyboard drivers as if a backlight would suddenly appear and the next with no explanations whatsoever told me that she was sending a box and that I should have it serviced by HP. Being kept in the dark is the worst thing. I called another support specialist and received the go around. Why the heck can't they give straight answers? HP enjoins everyone to buy through their emails which already seems like spamming and then once you buy it they give you the bull**bleep** go around when it comes to service. Disappointing!

Re: Pavilion dv7-1464 keyboard

Hi - I ended up going to my hometown computer supply store and purchasing a set of stickers made by LatKey (white on black) that I peeled and stuck over my otherwise useless keys. I'll bet you can find them online, too.  That was about a year ago and they are still stuck on and they do the job.  HP has since smartened up and you'll notice that their keyboards are now white on black.
