Repeated Hard Drive Failure - Pavilion notebook

I have a 2010 Pavilion Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium purchased in 2010.  The hard drive died with no warning about three weeks ago and failed every diagnostic I could run.  I ordered HP recovery discs and bought a new hard drive.  New hard drive was installed and OS loaded fine.  I used it for roughly one week when the new hard drive died.  I was reading the news and IE quit responding, and I could not exit, striking any key gave me a "ting" tone and so I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and that did not work.  I waited 20 minutes and there was no recovery so I had to shut it down hard.  It did not come back up.  I tried to use system recovery and it ran but couldn't fix the errors, didn't give me any detail.  I tried to restore and was told there was no restore point, although I had just created one a week earlier when I reinstalled the OS.  Frustrated, I used the HP Recovery Discs again.  The first time it went all the way through but when copying files to the HD, gave a Win err of missing some CIM file.  I tried again and it went through the whole process but stopped at 12% in installing files to the HD and shut itself off.  When I turned it back on I got a SMART error of imminent HD failure, ran the diagnostic and only finished 1% before telling me the HD was in error.  I do not understand how a brand new HD can fail so quickly.  There's nothing but Windows and a few kids games installed on the new HD, they hadn't even played any of them yet.  There's no error for the fan dying and every diagnostic but the HD passes.  I hestitate to go buy yet another HD if something else is causing them to crash.  Where should I be looking?  Or is there another test I should be running?

[ Edited ]

Please identify your HP notebook with its p/n. It can be found by removing the battery. Sometimes there is a BIOS update that addresses hardware issues.

Once I or another here in the forum has the part number we can peruse the available updates and QFEs to see if this issue has been addressed via software.

What is the brand of hard disk that you replaced the original one with?

Re: Repeated Hard Drive Failure - Pavilion notebook

HP Pavilion dv7 notebook

P/N WQ0861UA#ABA

Bios version F.14

AMD Phoenix N830 Triple Core 2.1GHz

4GB RAM

Ran hd test and rcv 0303 error code for first time, all prior attempts yielded 0301.

New HD is WD Scorpio Blue 320GB

Old HD Toshiba  HDD2E61 500 GB

If I let it try to load I get a black screen and the error message that Boot Manager is missing, HD test dies at 1%
