Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

Would it be possible for me to replace my 'Intel(R) WiFi link 1000 BGN' adapter with 'Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230' in order to have Bluetooth function, and use it without encountering any problem whatsoever? What are the other WiFi+Bluetooth combo adapters that are compatible with my laptop? Can I use HP part 655792-001 with my laptop? I do not want to use a USB Bluetooth dongle. HP Pavilion DV6-6170us Windows 7 64bit Intel(R) WiFi link 1000 GBN RAM: 6 GB Core i7 - 2630QM HDD : 750 GB Blueray Combo

Re: Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

[ Edited ]

Hi:

Unfortunately, the part number listed in the service manual for the Intel 6230 is incorrect, and no one here or at HP knows what the right one is.

And since HP locks out of the BIOS any cards not listed in the service manual (and they must have the HP Part # on them or they won't work), I don't believe you have any other dual band options.

Check your service manual for the list of supported cards and part numbers. I do not have any information on whether or not those part numbers are OK.  Hopefully they are.

HP should take the part back if for some reason it is incorrect or doesn't work.

See chapter 3, pages 31 & 32 for the supported cards and part #'s.

Also pay particular attention to the list...some are for any model dv6, and some are only for those with AMD or Intel processors.

I don't see the part number you referenced in the list of parts and when I entered it in the HP parts store website, it just says to contact reseller and does not list what models it will work in.  Normally when you click on a part that is available in the HP parts store, it gives a list of models it will work in.

Re: Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

First of all I thank you a lot for replying. And I apologize for my poor English. This is not my native language. I read the service manual before I post here in the forum. I know I am not the only one who encountered with this problem and I came to know all this troubles are due to some kind of a white list in BIOS. I have read many forum and those who have managed to use a different WiFi adapters have done so only after installing the modded BIOS. e.g. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home/can-i-put-a-intel-centrion-advanced-n-6230-card-... Can you please help me informing how safe is it to use modded BIOS and explain the impact of it on my laptop. Would further BIOS updating be possible? Please help. Thank you

Re: Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

Hi:

Unfortunately, I do not know anything about running the modified BIOS.

If you are an advanced user, and can follow the instructions to install the modified bios, then I suppose using a modified BIOS would be OK. Several people have done this without any problems.

However, you will not be able to update the BIOS once you install a modified BIOS.

If an update were to work, the new BIOS would put the whitelist back in, and your WLAN card would have to be removed.

Re: Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

Once again I thank you for helping me.

I can follow the indtructions well for installing modified BIOS and underrstand the procedure and the risks of it.

After that BIOS update with fixed mode for graphic I don't think HP can provide me with any other useful updates.

So being unable to update my BIOS is quite allright with me.

What troubles my mind is finding a safe version of modified BIOS which alows me to change BIOS setting without freezing the laptop and without giving any errors..

If you know a place from where I can get a good version of moded BIOS please be kind enough to mention it or post a link.

Only a few volunteers to help others these day.

 really appriciate your help.

Thank you.

Hi:

I don't know specifically of where you can download a mod for a dv6, but perhaps this link will be of help to you.

Re: Replace WiFi adapter HP pavilion DV6-6170us

I have been doing a lot of browsing to check for solutions other than using modded BIOS as a lot of them were reported to be unstable.

I came across this forum which seems to be really interesting.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/651517-found-hp-approved-dual-band-wireless-n-...

The adapter Ralink RT3592BC8 is included in the whitelist of the BIOS according to iyshannon of above forum.

I am going to check it out when I have time and will post my result here.

I thank him too for sharing it with others.
