Hello
I've jut purchased a HP Pavilion dv6-6b08sa.
I love the laptop. I did a clean install of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with Service Pack 1 - Refresh because i didnt want all the software that HP put on there for me - no offence HP, i really dont like any of it.
Anyway. Everything has installed perfectly , except the SM Bus Controller - i have a yellow ! next to it - no drivers...
I have did the auto driver update in device manager, nothing found. I have read that some people have tried installing the latest AMD / ATI graphics and chipset drivers. So i did this using the automatic detect and install software from AMD - it advised i install Version 12.4 Mobility drivers. Still, the SM Bus Controller has no drivers.
I had an old Dell laptop before, and the problem was resolved by installing the media card reader drivers (odd i know!), so i tried this also on my new HP - again still no drivers for the SM Bus Controller...
Can anyone help me???
Many thanks
James

Hi, James:
Normally a SM Bus Controller is part of the motherboard components usually installed with a chipset driver.
You can try this chipset driver from AMD as you have a SB820M southbridge chipset.
The first download listed is the one you would want.

Hey
Thanks very much! The second link you provided was perfect, worked a treat!
While your still here. i was wondering - the hard drive seems very slow, have i done something wrong or is it known that the laptops supplied by HP have slow hard drives??
I'm used to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive which was pretty quick..
Any tips you can give would be really helpful...
Thanks
James

You're very welcome, James.
Please click on the hard drive in the device manager and post the model number.
Then we can look up the specs.

Hey
I've had a look and its a SAMSUNG HM641JI I've just done a quick test, copied a file from one location to another, and i;m coming back with 10mb per second which is slower then my old USB external drive which can transfer files to and from my laptop at 30 mb per second so i'm a bit concerned. (Not wonder my windows updates are taking forever!)
Many thanks for your time
James

Hi, James:
Here's the specs:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8
Seems like a very decent drive except for the 5,400 RPM and the 8 MB cache part.
I wonder if that is why you feel that it isn't as fast as your WD drive.
A 7,200 RPM notebook drive will give better seek times, but will eat up the battery faster. A larger cache is better too, such as a 16 or 32 MB one.
I can't imagine with a fresh install of W7, chipset drivers installed (which install the drive controllers), that there is anything you could have done better.
Nope, I think it is what it is.
One like this would be real nice...

Hey
Maybe your right, i'm just used to the speed of the WD one... If it really starts to annoy me, i might just switch the drives round... But then i loose half the space.... GRRR! lol
Thanks very much for your help

You're most welcome, James.
Now's the time to do it before you start loading a bunch of stuff on the drive. ![]()
Best regards,
Paul
