Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in my computer

Hi -

I own a Presario X1015US laptop and recently purchased a new hard drive for it (Western Digital Scorpio Blue PATA 160GB) however when I insert the operating system CD it goes through the whole process until it gets to a page where it says:

Windows XP Home Edition Setup

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connectd to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue.  To quit Setup, press F3.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong and hope someone can help me.  For example -

- I checked the Bios and I do not see where the drive is located - am i missing something?

- Is the drive I purchased compatible for this model - I was told by Fry's Electronics that it is.

If the bios does not see it, XP setup never will either.

Some older Laptops have a problem with  larger hard drives (over 137gb), I would return the drive and see if they have a 120gb model.

It is also possible you just got a bad one.

Hi -

based on my initial request for assistance on installing new hard drive on my presariox1015us, I purchased a new smaller hard drive - 80 GB PATA 2.5 however windows is still saying that Setup did not find any hard disk drives.  Do you have any other suggestions?  I called HP and they said it might be the motherboard?  Not sure...how do i check that?  Also...is there a different way to install the operating system...should I try a different operating system?

All I can suggest it to enter the bios and "load defaults", save changes on exit.
